Complete details will be in the July 2005 issue of CQ magazine. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- For release: Immediate For more information, contact: Rich Moseson, W2VU, Editor 516-681-2922 w2vu@cq-amateur-radio.com CQ Introduces "iDX Award" to Help "Wake Up DXing" (Hicksville, NY - May 17, 2005) - CQ Amateur Radio magazine today announced the introduction of the "iDX Award," the third and final piece of its three-part "Waking Up DXing" program designed to encourage more DXing activity among ham radio operators. DXing, for the uninitiated, is the "sport" of contacting other hams in faraway places. "The iDX Award brings back and updates an old concept," says CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, "of introductory-level awards to help bring newer hams into the sport and mindset of DXing." In the past, Moseson noted, there were Novice awards, but most have been discontinued as changes in licensing have meant that virtually all new hams today enter as Technicians, operating in the VHF and UHF ham bands. "The iDX Award brings the concept of the Novice award to where newer hams are operating today." The CQ iDX Award recognizes confirmed contacts with 25 to 100 different countries ("entities") made using remote bases or repeaters linked with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks, such as IRLP or Echolink, and is aimed at developing a DXing "mindset" among newer hams. "The demarcation between wired and wireless communication is blurred by modern integrated systems employed by public safety agencies and commercial users," adds CQ DX Awards Manager Billy Williams, N4UF. "This 'blurring of the line' between wired and wireless has already reached amateur radio in several ways using the internet to collect and distribute DX 'spots,' propagation data and location information, using the internet to link existing VHF and UHF repeaters over great distances, and using the internet to access an HF 'remote base' station. It is these last two on which the CQ iDX Award will focus … The CQ iDX Award recognizes the changing landscape and its inevitable effect on where Amateur Radio will be in 2020." Moseson and Williams both noted that at least one end of each contact must be made over the radio to count for the award. "Computer-to-computer contacts, while possible on such systems as Echolink, will not count for this award," they noted. "At least one person in each contact must be on the radio." Contacts for the new award may be made beginning January 1, 2006. Complete details are in the June 2005 issue of CQ and on the CQ website at . CQ previously introduced the CQ DX Field Award (April 2005 issue) and the new CQ DX Marathon (May 2005 issue) as the first two parts of its "Waking Up DXing" program.
