DVD VIDEO REVIEWED BY EDITOR TEDD MIRGLIOTTA, KB8NW (K4M - Midway Atoll: "Stepping Stone of the Pacific")
.

***** Five Star Rating
- If you are big fan of James Brooks, 9V1YC, DXpedition videos, than you are going to want to add this one to your collection. This video is probably his best video yet. As in all of his videos, James provides you with great cinematography of the island and a story of the DXpedition. The video starts with the K4M DXpedition team waiting to leave the Hawaiian Islands, but was delayed due to mechanical problems with their chartered aircraft. However, after a few days, the team was able to leave for Midway and only lost a few days of their operating time. During the DXpedition antenna setup, you will see the K4M team taking great care and extreme measures in protecting the birds on the island. No Yagis were used. Only verticals were used under the request/advisement of the U.S. Forest and Wildlife Service.

Naturally, the video shows the K4M operating during the DXpedition, but the video also provides interesting details on the history of Midway Atoll and how the U.S. Forest and Wildlife Service was able to take control and make it into a reserve in 1988 to protect the wildlife on the island. Interviews with the members of the K4M team and individuals from U.S. Forest and Wildlife Service also provided interesting details about Midway. Operating/living conditions on the island - air conditioning, a bar, three meals a day from a cafeteria, scenic views from the window, InterNet access, cable TV -- WHAT! Are they staying at the Hilton? James also provides video from many different views/loctaions on the island (old air force base and hangers, old ham shack, interesting stuff/junk left behind by the military, beaches, abandoned buildings..etc). I do not want to spoil it with any more details. Buy the video! It is 44 minutes of great PBS quality video that you will enjoy, and it is now available for 25.00 USDs. To order yours today, go to:

OX, GREENLAND (Update to OPDX.951)
Reid, N0RC, now active as OX/K0KU from Thule, Greenland (NA-018), announnced this past week on the AMSAT mail list that he will be changing his QTH. He states, "Although I am scheduled to be in Thule until April 23rd, there is a chance I could leave as early as April 21st. I will be going to Wallops Island, VA, to put our radar equipment on a P-3 aircraft and do flight tests. I will be returning to Greenland on May 1st (although there is talk that it will be pushed back to May 4th). I will be in Sondrestrom, grid GP47pa, for two weeks before returning to Thule for two more weeks around May 18th. Thanks to everyone that has tried to work me. You've made this trip a lot of fun!"

Reid operates the HF bands, including 10m if it is open. If 10m is open, Reid will be giving out his 10-10 number upon request. Also, Reid operates on the satellites, activating grid FQ56 during his time on Thule. He will be limited to FM birds with a VHF uplink. Satellite operation is also dependent on the BMEWS radar system not interfering with the UHF downlink. Reid will upload his log to ClubLog.org, LoTW and Eqsl. QSL direct or by the Bureau via N0RC.
ADDED NOTE BY REID: "Since I will be operating in my spare time, I cannot give a predictable schedule. I plan on sending out an announcement before I go on the air through a google group page with planned times, bands and modes of operation for that day. People can sign up by going to:

LAST MINUTE UPDATE: Official Announcement Dated 17 April, 2010, from the Visalia International DX Convention --
"The Microlite Penguins DXpedition team will be activating the South Orkney Islands (DXCC VP8/O, IOTA AN-008) from January 27 to February 8, 2011. Safe and reliable Antarctic transportation has been secured by the experienced RV Braveheart, and activity will be on all HF bands 160m-10m using SSB, CW and RTTY.

Operators will be K9ZO, ND2T, 9V1YC, K0IR, N1DG, N0AX, W3WL, N6MZ, I8NHJ, N4GRN, WB9Z, W7EW and VE3EJ. This will be the team's fourth time activating an entity in the Antarctic region and fifth DXpedition overall.

You may recognize most of the callsigns from the group's past operations, but we've also added several new members to the team, all of whom have been on DXpeditions to some of the world's rarest entities.

Those who have enjoyed our operations over the last 8 years may recall that our methods and philosophy are somewhat different from other DX- peditions. Though our overall goal is still to provide a new DXCC entity on as many bands and modes as possible, we also strive to increase the fun factor by focusing on operational simplicity and radio skill.

In the past we kept the Microlite Penguins DXpeditions non-commercial and confined the financial burden to ourselves and a single sponsor, the NCDXF. But today, with the astronomical cost of Antarctic travel and a budget approaching US$300,000, this single-sponsor approach is no longer a reality. To make this DXpedition happen, we must break our tradition and ask for support of the entire amateur radio community. All financial support, no matter what the amount will be welcome. We have even set up a website where DXers, clubs and foundations can donate online:

http://www.vp8o.com
It is the support and encouragement of the DX community that will make this exciting Antarctic adventure a success. We hope that you, personally, can be a part of this adventure, share the excitement with us, and help bring the Microlite Penguins to the airwaves once again.

73 and see you on the bands.
The Microlite Penguins DXpedition Team"

Pierre will be on the island for one year and activity will be mainly SSB and Digital (He states, "Sorry, no CW".). A Web page is now online, but is still under construction. Pierre told OPDX a few weeks ago that he will have access to the InterNet on the island. Watch the following Web page for updates:
http://www.zs8m.com
UPDATE: Pierre, ZS1HF/ZS8M, reports (edited): "I arrived on Marion Island on April 15th, but will be operating as ZS1HF/P until the ship leaves for Cape Town. I have too much work to complete in the field before the ship leaves and operating ZS8M just places too much pressure on me. I will try and monitor 14.240 during the day, if and when I am in the base. Keep watching this site (QRZ.com)! 73 Pierre ZS1HF/ZS8M"
