As this was being written, OPDX received the following press release from Ron, K5XK (edited - dated April 13th, 1600z): "Rachid, 3B8FQ, is expected to land overnight on Agalega Island, AF-001. He will operate as 3B6FQ for five days, April 14-18th (2008). When not tending to radio officer duties, Rachid will operate all bands 80-10m, on SSB and CW only. 4W, TIMOR-LESTE (Update)
The Union de Radioaficionados Espanoles, URE, (The Spanish Amateur Radio League) is proud to announce a project in East Timor to take place in June 2008. URE's Radiosolidarity Department will organize an Amateur Radio DXpedition, combined with activities to promote Amateur Radio including the donation and setting up of a complete amateur radio station at the University of Dili. It is hoped that by operating alongside students and teachers of the Electrical Engineering and other departments it will be possible to sow the seeds of future amateur radio activity of a permanent nature in East Timor. The current team consists of the following experienced operators: Angel/EA1QF (Team Leader CW/Digi), Txema/EA5BWR (CW/SSB/Digi), Eugene/EA4KA (CW), Pere/EA3CUU (CW), Jose/CT1ERC (SSB/Digi) and Jose/EA4DB (CW/SSB/Digi). 6V, SENEGAL
Operators Witek/SP9MRO and Marian/SP9CTT will be active from here between April 17th and May 5th. They have requested the callsigns 6V7K and 6V7J. Activity will be on 160-10 meters (with an emphasis on 160-30 meters), CW, SSB, PSK31 and RTTY. QSL 6V7K via SP9SX and 6V7J via SP9CTT.

9M6, SPRATLY ISLANDS
Operators Halvard/LA7XK (KK6ZS), Just/LA9DL and Erling/LA6VM will be active as 9M6/LA7XK, 9M6/LA9DL and 9M6/LA6VM, respectively, from Layang Layang in the Spratly Islands, between April 18-25th. QSL via their home callsigns, direct or by the bureau.

DX DINNER - Jay, K4ZLE, SWODXA HamVention publicity person, sent out the following: "This press release is a reminder that Dayton HamVention is coming soon. For those DXers who have not attended the DX dinner held on Fridays of HamVention you are missing a great opportunity to meet and greet some of the most well known DX operators in the country, if not the world. LAST MINUTE UPDATE - As this was being written, Jay, K4ZLE, informs OPDX that "the program has been set for the DX dinner. Eric Scace, K3NA, one of the forces behind the excellent VP6DX operation will be our main speaker. He will present "A Day in the Life of a DXpeditioner" ... photos, stories and maybe some audio snippets that paint a picture of what life is like for a person in an expedition. Obviously, Eric will use VP6DX as his backdrop."

FM, MARTINIQUE (NA-107)
French DXCC card checker Gerard, F2VX, will be active as FM/F2VX between April 25th and May 8th. Activity will be SSB on the HF bands. QSL via F2VX, direct or by the bureau.

FS, FRENCH ST. MARTIN
John, K9EL, will be here between April 24th and May 4th on a family vacation and will operate as FS/K9EL whenever possible. He will be using an IC7000 and verticals for 80-10 meters, mainly CW and SSB. RTTY is possible as well. Please QSL to his home callsign, Bureau cards are "OK".

GB3, ENGLAND (Special Event - Corrected)
Look for GB3GEO (not GB6GEO) to be on the air from "The Prehistoric Caves", of "Kent's Cavern", England's oldest home in Britain. GB3GEO will be situated in "The English Riviera" (Torbay), that is recognized as having Geo Park status. There are six in the UK, and fifty-three in the world. They hope GB3GEO will help to promote geological heritage to the general public. There will be a special open day at the caves on Sunday, May 25th, and GB3GEO will be on the air during the weekend of May 24-25th. Operations will be on 80-2 meters. The station will be run by Martin/G3VOF, with help from John/G7HIK, Paddy/M1EIW and Roger/2E0GHR. There will be a special QSL card sent for all QSOs made with GB3GEO via the bureau.

HB0, LIECHTENSTEIN (EME Activity)
Operators Kasimir/DL2SBY and Georg/DF1SR (ex-DD0SB) will be active from here between May 5-12th. Activity will be on 80-6 meters, CW, SSB and RTTY, using 600 watts into a Butternut HF9V antenna. They also plan to be active in the EU-EME Contest (May 11-12th) on the 23cm band. Operations will also include EME on 1296 MHz (500 watts/ Dish 3m) and 2320 MHz (200 watts/Dish 3m). IOTA NEWS
EU-030. Michael, DL6MHW, will be active as OZ/DL6MHW from Bornholm Island (BO-001 for the Danish Islands Award, WLOTA LH-2203) between July 18th and August 4th. Activity will be on all bands 80-10 meters, including an entry in the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 26-27th). QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the bureau.

EU-130. Jens, DL8WOW, will be active as OZ/DL8WOW from Bornholm Island (BO-001 for the Danish Islands Award, WLOTA LH-2203), August 3-15th. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the bureau.

EU-042. Operators Helmut/DL1ECU and Rolf/DK1DN will be active as homecall/p from Hallig Langeness (N-19 for the German Islands Award, WLOTA LH-1245) between April 22nd and May 3rd. They plan to have two stations active on all HF bands. QSL via their home callsigns.

EU-043. Bernd, DL8AAV, will active as SD1B/6 from Tjorn Island, Sweden, June 15-28th. Activity will be on the HF bands, on or near the usual island and IOTA frequencies. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the bureau.

EU-051. Members from the Noantri Radio Club in Rome will be active as IE9N from Ustica Island between April 24th and May 1st. Activity will be on all bands and modes. Look for their 6m beacon to be on air as IE9N/B. This group will activate this unique location, trying to give another good reference number to the world-wide IOTA comunity after last year operations as OH10TA. Ustica is a small volcanic island situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is characterized by reduced sources of water, and the vegetation is consequently scarce. It is also a marine protected area, and one of most important scuba diving spots in Europe. More details and live updates are available at:

EU-170. Gianfranco, I6GFX, plans to activate several islands in the Dalmatia North Group (EU-170) for the Islands of Croatia Award (IOCA) as 9A/I6GFX from June 21-27th. He will start with six days on Dugi Otok Island (IOCA CI-018, ACIA-367, CIA-10, MIA MC-074, CLHA-178, TWLHD WLH 9A-077) in Veli Rat, locality Verunic, and set up his base there. The others islands to be activated are as follows:

NA-213. Ray/K9DUR and Pam/KC9JMA will be active as homecall/p from Dauphin Island (USI AL-002S, Mobile County, Alabama), April 17-22nd. Look for activity on the usual island and IOTA frequencies. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the bureau.

OC-130. Maarten, PA3GZU, will be active as DU9/PA3GZU from Mindanao Island (LH-2803, WW Loc. PJ27UH) between now and May 12th. Activity will be mainly on 20 meters (14260 kHz SSB and 14070 kHz BPSK31). Maarten is on holiday, so his activity will be limited. Most of his activity is expected at the end of April and the first week of May. QSL via his home callsign, the bureau is preferred.

OC-223. Nick, VK1AA, plans to be active as VK1AA/2 from this rare entity called Montague Island (WLOTA LH-0722) between April 15-18th. He has obtained permission from the NSW Parks and Wildlife Group to operate from the island. The operation is provisionally planned to start on April 15th for 3 nights, but factors such as weather conditions may change the dates. He will be running 75 watts into a vertical antenna, mostly CW on 40/30/20 meters. QSL direct via Nick Hacko, PO BOX 900 Spit Junction, 2088 NSW, Australia. Bureau requests via VE3EXY.

KP2, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
Operators Ann/KP2YL and Brian/KP2HC will be back to visit the island of St Croix from April 16-23rd. Look for them on 160-6 meters, CW and SSB. QSL direct only via their California address which is listed in all the major callsign databases.

KP4, PUERTO RICO
A group of operators will be activating Isla de Cabras (PUR012 - Goats Island) for the U.S. Islands awards program and commemo- rating "World Amateur Radio Day" on April 18th. Activity will be on 20-10 meters and possibly 40 meters using the callsign KP4DJ on CW, SSB and maybe PSK31. Operation will be from 1300-2300z. QSL via WP4F.

MJ, JERSEY
Lars, DF1LON, will be active as MJ0LON during the CQWW WPX CW Contest (May 24-25th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/High-Power entry. QSL via DF1LON.

MJ, JERSEY
Operators Charles/M0OXO and Nigel/M0NJW will be active as MJ0X from Les Minquiers Islands (EU-099) during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 26-27th). Operating class was not provided. QSL via M3ZYZ.

OJ, MARKET REEF (EU-053)
Six operators will activate Market Reef between July 11-14th, which will include a Multi-Single entry in the IARU HF World Championship (July 12-13th). The group will have three stations on the air on 160-6 meters. Operators mentioned are: Olaf/SM0CKV, Seppo/OH1VR, Markus/ OH3RM, Bob/W6RGG, Vicky/AE9YL and Carl/K9LA. All operators will sign OJ0/homecall before and after the IARU Contest, except for OH1VR who will use OJ0VR. QSL all OJ0/homecalls via operators' home callsigns and OJ0VR via OH1VR. A special callsign for the contest has been applied for and is not yet known. The Market Reef lighthouse has the following reference numbers: ARLHS MAR-001, TWLHD WLH OJ0-001, WLOTA LH-0542 and Admiralty C4472.

OL76, CZECH REPUBLIC (Special Event)
Look for special event station OL76CAV to be active for 24 hours on April 20th. Activity is to celebrate 76th anniversary of the founding of Ceskomoravsti Amateri Vysilaci

PJ2, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES
Members of the Caribbean Contesting Consortium (CCC) will activate Signal Point Station on Curacao (SA-006, WLOTA LH-0942) as PJ2T during the CQ World Wide DX CW Contest (November 29-30th) as a Multi-? entry. Operators mentioned are Geoff/W0CG, Jeff/K8ND, Jim/ W8WTS and possibly others. Also look for Martin/W1MD and possibly others to be active as PJ2T during the CQ World Wide DX SSB Contest (October 25-26th) as a Multi-? entry. QSL both operations via N9AG. Also, QSL PJ2T via LoTW.

PJ2, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES (Contest Station Available For IARU)
Geoff, W0CG/PJ2DX (PJ2T Rental Coordinator and Chief Janitor), announced this past week that the PJ2T Signal Point Station on Curacao (SA-006, WLOTA LH-0942) is available for IARU Contest in July, given that none of the club members are able to make that trip this year. If you or your group want to take a crack at that contest, you could get almost any PJ2* callsign assigned except PJ2T, PR2A, or PJ2R. Geoff will be on site during your visit to support you in using the station and getting around in the QTH. There are four beds available in two bedrooms (with two baths). Geoff is also willing to operate with your team if you wanted help, or would also be happy to sit it out and let you or your group do it on your own. MORE ON W3HC. Well known QSL Manager, Bob Schenck, N2OO, informs OPDX that since Mac, W3HC, is retiring as a QSL Manager, the QSL Manager's Society is acquiring the logs and cards from Mac. All callsigns will be assigned to new managers from the QSL Manager's Society. It will take some time to sort and reassign most of these callsigns. However, the following currently ACTIVE callsign ONLY will be handled by Kim Larsen (dad, Steve Larsen) via N3SL. The callsigns are: CO6AP, 7X5VRK, PY2KC, YL2EC, TU2XZ, PT5T, PS2T and ZY100S (previous special event). Bob states, "I ask everyone with any QSLs for Mac, W3HC, to hold off sending them until we announce new managers. Please be patient while we organize this project. S2, BANGLADESH
John, KX7YT, will once again be active as S21YV from Dhaka, April 14-21st. It was reported that he was only able to secure a 7 day license for this trip but is having difficulty securing anything longer term. John is expected to be there until May 1st, but may return in late spring or early summer. Activity will only take place during his spare time. QSL via his home callsign.

T2, TUVALU
Udo, DL9HCU, is now active as T20HC. The length of his stay is unsure (possibly through April 22nd or sooner). He likes 20 meters CW, so watch 14002 or 14025 kHz between 0500-0800z. Also, watch 14183 kHz (after 0500z), Udo will check into the ANZA Net. He was also spotted on 18077 kHz between 0800-0945z this past weekend. QSL via DL9HCU.

TI, COSTA RICA (IOTA Op)
Klaus, DK6AO, will once again be back here signing TI/DK6AO between April 16th and May 17th. This time he will try to activate IOTA islands groups NA-191 and NA-117. Activity will be mainly on the weekends. Klaus prefers 20/17 meters. QSL via his home callsign (using the (QRZ.com) address).

V8, BRUNEI (OC-088)
Operators John/9M6XRO and Gerben/PG5M will be active from the lodge of Ambran, V85SS, in Brunei later this week. Both have applied for the license, but the callsigns are not known yet. Their activity schedule is as follows: John/9M6XRO from April 17-23rd and Gerben/PG5M from April 18-21st. Equipment will be a JRC 245 and antennas are a Mosley TA-53-M, a full wave dipole for top band as well as two verticals covering all bands including 30/17/12m. Four operators will be active from Christmas Island (OC-002) during July for 10 days. Activity will be on 160-10 meters and possibly 6 meters. They plan to have three station active (one with high power, 2 barefoot). Operators, with modes of operation and their callsigns are as follows:

Well known awards guru Ted Melinosky, K1BV, informs OPDX that he has a page on his Awards Web site which keeps track of "Very Short Term Awards" - those awards commemorating club anniversaries, centennials, special celebrations - from all over the world. He states, "As of today, I'm showing the rules for 17 such awards, mostly for those coming up in the next few weeks, but some of them going out a few months into the future." YK, SYRIA
Only a few more days to work Roger/G3SXW, Nigel/G3TXF, Fred/ G4BWP, Lionel/G5LP and Rob/GM3YTS as YK9G from the capital city of Damaskus. They will go QRT on April 15th. They have two stations on the air (with amplifiers) 24 hours a day on CW ONLY (mostly on 40/30/20/17m). They do have antennas for 160-10 meters. The YK9G log is being uploaded to LoTW at regular intervals during the operation. Many are surprised and happy to receive their contacts on LoTW basically the next day! YK, SYRIA
Saad, N5FF, informs OPDX that he will be arriving in Damascus on the evening of April 20th and should be active again as YK1BA from April 21st and May 2nd. He will return home to Texas on May 3rd. As usual, the purpose of the trip is not a DXpedition, so his operating will be spotty. However, Saad states that he hopes to be able to operate at least 3-4 hours a day. He also states, "With the current band conditions and my typical operating times, I suspect that I will spend most of my radio time on 30, 40, and 80 meters. However, I will operate on whatever band (80-10m) and mode that have the best propagation at the time. Most probable operating times are between 2000-2300 UTC or between 0200-0500 UTC and possibly some occasional activities between 1200-1400 UTC. I will be active on SSB, CW, and RTTY." QSL via N5FF.

ZD9, TRISTAN DA CUNHA ISLAND (Update on Atlantic Ocean Tour - Possibly Bouvet Island 3Y/b)
Tom, ZD7X (KC0W), reports that he will be departing St. Helena Island in late June and will be traveling to his next DX location of Tristan da Cunha Island. His callsign on Tristan will be ZD9X, and he will be there for at lease 4-6 months, maybe longer. A home has been secured for him with a backyard measuring one acre with plenty of room for antennas. Tom states,

"Operating from St. Helena has been rather fun. I will be excited for a new DX location after all is said and done though. Full story to come out someday!!! With almost 35,000 QSOs now, the radio and vertical antenna have been doing a good job. I DO NOT want to have to break out the spare radios of a Kenwood TS-2000 and a Yaesu 100D if something should go wrong with my main 'good' radio.

Once on Tristan, my plan is to explore a way of getting to Bouvet Island and to operate from there before a TENATIVE operation to the three islands of South Sanswich, South Orkney and South Georgia via the Falkland Islands. According to the '100 Most Needed List', (2006) Bouvet is ranked at 8th in the world. It would be a crying shame to be less than 1400 miles from Bouvet and not to give a 100% effort to try to put Bouvet on the air. Bouvet is located nearest to Tristan than any other island. Still no plans of any RTTY/PSK activity as either ZD7X or ZD9X. My MicroHam unit that should allow Digi operation has not worked since I got here. Personal interest in the Digi modes is also not that great..... Good DX, Tom ZD7X"
