CQ MAGAZINE
Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editor of CQ Amateur Radio, provides the following:

FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATE (March 8, 2007)
CQ Introduces "HF Operator's Survival Guide"
(Hicksville, NY - March 8, 2007) -- In response to recent changes in licensing rules and operating privileges for all hams, the editors of CQ Amateur Radio magazine have prepared an "HF Operator's Survival Guide," a 16-page "getting started" guide for newcomers to high-frequency (shortwave) amateur radio communications.

Written by CQ Contesting Editor John Dorr, K1AR; Contributing Editor Gordon West, WB6NOA, and CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, who also oversaw the overall production, the booklet is a practical hands-on guide to success in HF ham radio.

Segments include:
"HF: Your Window to the World," by K1AR, a brief description of the characteristics of each HF ham band and which is best when;

"The Basics of HF Operating," also by K1AR, covers operating practices on HF, particularly as they differ from common practices on VHF;

"Choosing Your First Rig," by WB6NOA, looks at the considerations that go into deciding whether to buy new or used, basic or something to "grow into," and important considerations such as band coverage and receiver quality;

"Antennas to Get You Going," by the late Joe Carr, K4IPV (written for a previous project that was never published), covers the basics of dipoles, verticals and beam antennas;

"HF Activity Guide," by W2VU, which looks at the different modes and operating activities a ham is likely to encounter on HF, along with an introduction to certificate-chasing and contesting; and

"An HF Band Chart," showing the new frequency privileges for each class of license on each HF band

"Starting out on HF can be pretty intimidating," says Moseson, "especially now, at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, when DX opportunities are harder to find. This practical guide will help the new HF operator, regardless of license class, hit the air running."

CQ's "HF Operator's Survival Guide" sells for $2 (plus shipping), with discounts available for bulk purchases. To order, or for more information, contact CQ Communications, Inc. at 800-853-9797 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern time.
