600M BAND
The FCC Office of Engineering and Technology has recently
granted a Part 5 experimental license to the ARRL on behalf of a group
of radio amateurs interested in investigating the spectrum in the vicinity
of 500 kHz. Rudy, N6LF, is one of several who has now begun experimental
operations on 600m (505-510) kHz. He reported this past week that he is on
the air at 506 kHz operating in the beacon mode. The message is:
After each transmission there is a 40 second pause and then the message repeats. Rudy's planned operating times will be from 0100-0430z every day if possible. He states, "No doubt there will be some exceptions, but I will do my best to be regular for the next 3-4 weeks." Rudy is using a 130 ft. vertical with a 300 ft. top loading wire running the maximum allowed power, so he should be audible over much of the western USA. Rudy would appreciate any signal reports. Please send them to him at: rudys@ordata.com Rudy believes this will be a very interesting experiment and hopes it will result in a new MF band for hams. He states, "That of course is very much for the future. Right now we need to see what we can accomplish with this experimental license." For more information about 600m, visit the ARRL Web Page at:

ALL DXers!! This is a reminder about IRCs. The Universal Postal Union (UPU)
has decided that the current style of IRCs will NOT be exchanged for stamps
after the expiry date, 31-12-2006 (31st December 2006). I can not accept
this type of IRC after that date because the post office will not give
stamps in exchange. YOU CAN SEE THAT DATE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, ABOUT
HALFWAY DOWN. The new style of IRC looks similar but shows two hands with
fingers touching and these are already on sale ... valid until 31-12-2009.
Please use THIS type or U.S. dollars. Time to use up these older ones and
stock up with the newer ones."
