CCF & OHDXF CRUISE
Once again, the Contest Club Finland (CCF) and the OH DX Foundation (OHDXF) are proud to announce the 11th CCF & OHDXF Contest and DX Meeting on January 20-22nd, 2006. The meeting concept will be the same as last January - a cruise on the Baltic Sea from Helsinki(OH) via Aland Islands (OH0) to Stockholm (SM) and back to Helsinki. CN, MOROCCO
Jim, W7EJ, will be active as CN2R during the CQ WW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th) as a Single-Op/Single-Band (40m) entry. Look for him to be active before the contest on the WARC bands and 160 meters. QSL via W7EJ.

EA8, CANARY ISLANDS
Uli/DK2OC and Rich/W4GKR will be active (possibly as EA8/homecall) from Gran Canaria Island (AF-004) now through September 4th. Uli will handle CW and Rich will do SSB/PSK. If anyone needs a (specially) PSK contact, please send info on Band/GMT, band opening to your QTH to:

ET3, ETHIOPIA
YL chasers may want to look for the E.A.R.S. club station, ET3AA, on 20 meters. Operator Mima was heard this past week on 14174 kHz between 1530-1600z. QSL via Box 60258, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

GD6, ISLE OF MAN
Operators Joe/K1JB and Mike/K1EU will be active as GD6IA during the CQ WW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th) as Multi-Single entry. QSL only direct to K1EU.

HI3, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Ted, HI3TEJ, announced that he will be active in the CQ WW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th) as a Single-Op/All-Band entry. QSL via ON4IJ.

HS0, THAILAND
Charles, K4VUD, is now on the air as HS0ZCW. He informed the DX community that there will be no 80 meters operations planned for now. However, he may try to activate the HS0AC club station on that band during the big contests. More details are forthcoming.

IOTA NEWS
AF-NEW. Mustapha/DL1BDF and Salaam/SU1ER announce that an Egyptian team consisting of SU1KA, SU1KM and SU1ER will be teaming up with guest operators from Italy to activate the new IOTA, Gifton Island (AF-New). The SU/I team has received permission to activate the island using the callsign/license, SU8GFTN. Activity is expected during September 2005. More details are forthcoming. AF-018. Operator IT9BLB and an international team will be active as IH9P from Pantelleria Island (IIA: TP01, WAIP: TP and ITU Zone: 37) during both CQ WW DX SSB and CW Contests as a Multi-???? entry. QSL via KR7X.

AS-060. Members of the Pyongtaek DX Club (D90HE) will be active from Saok Island (KDN H32 - Shinan-Gun), August 26-28th. Operators mentioned are: Han/DS2GOO, Lee/6K2CEW, Kim/DS4PAI and Kim/ 6K2CSD. AS-100. Mark/4Z4KX, Ros/4Z5LA, Yuli/4X6HP, Isaac/4Z5LI, Ilya/4Z1UF and Jan/4X1VF will be active as 4X7AZ from Akhziv Island between September 30th and October 1st. Activity will be on 40-10 meters CW and SSB. They plan to have three stations on the air. QSL via 4Z5LA (QRZ.com).

EU-017. Fabio, IZ7FLQ, will be active as ID9/IZ7FLQ/p from a few islands in the Eolie Group (IOTA EU-017) between now and August 27th. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the bureau.

EU-047. Matt, DJ8OG, will be active as DJ8OG/p from Baltrum Island (GIA N-06), now through August 27th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters (no WARC bands) SSB. QSL via his home callsign, direct or through the bureau.

EU-061. Jorgen/LA5UF, Paul/LA6YEA and Trond/LA9VDA will be active as LA6Q from Svenner Island, September 15-18th. They will also activate the Svenner Fyr/Larvik lighthouse (WLH LA-025, ARLHS NOR-044 and WLOTA 1029). Activity will be mostly on 80-17 meter CW, SSB with some RTTY. They also plan to participate in the SAC CW Contest with one station. QSL via LA9VDA (QRZ.com).

EU-124. Look for the Barry Amateur Radio Society to activate GB5FI from Flatholm Island, Friday, August 26th to Tuesday, August 30th. This is their annual trip. Activity will be on SSB, PSK, RTTY, SSTV, CW, Top Band to 70 Cms plus 6 meters. QSL via GW0ANA, callbook address or by the bureau.

EU-138. Operators Mario/DL5ME and Guenter/DG3HWO will be active as SM7/DL5ME and SM7/DG3HWO from Hassloe Island, August 27-31st. Activity will be on the 40/30/20/17/15 meters CW/SSB. Antennas are a Butternut and Spiderbeam. QSL via their home callsigns, direct (prefer) or by the bureau (longer wait).

OC-148. Hot, YC0IEM, will be active as YC0IEM/9 from Timor Island from August 29th through September 15th. QSL via IZ8CCW, direct or by the Bureau.

IARC'S AWARD WEB PAGE CHANGE

KH7K, KURE ISLAND (Update)
A press release was sent out by Ward, N0AX, late last week (dated 8/19/2005) indicating that the K7C team will be leaving for Kure Island in less than a month. OPDX InterNet Subscribers will receive the complete press release as an additional bulletin. Excerpts from the release state that the K7C team will leave the Hawaiian Island by boat aboard the Machias on September 15th. It will take about 9 days to sail to Kure Atoll, aided by the trade winds. The return trip will take another day or two. During the voyage, they hope to be active as K7C/mm on the HF bands. The success of this phase of the operation depends on how they can best rig an antenna aboard the Machias. Activity from Kure is expected to be between September 24th and October 6th. MONTAIN DXPEDITION CANCELLED!
Alan, VK4AAR, reports: "It is with regret that the DXpedition to a remote Dayak mountain village (of Sarawak - 9M8) has had to be cancelled. Various factors contributed to this unfortunate circumstance which caused Sengchai Chan (9M8SC) and Festus (9M8FH) and their team to 'pull the plug' on their late August plans."

OH0, ALAND ISLAND
Ari, OH5DX, will be active as OH0Z during the CQ WW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th). Operation class is to be determined, probably Single-Op and Single-Band (15m) or All-Band entry. QSL via W0MM.

P5, DEMOCRATIC PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF KOREA
No QSNs reported yet for Dave, KA2HTV, as P5/KA2HTV as this was being written Sunday morning. There has been some PIRATED QSNs but nothing legit. During the next few days there "should" be activity. He announced that his last three days would be devoted to ham radio. He is expected to be there until August 23rd. QSL via KK5DO.

S6, SINGAPORE
Members of the "Singapore Amateur Radio Transmitting Society" (SARTS) will organize another local field day to be held August 26-29th, from St. John's Island (AS-019). They expect a fairly large group of local operators to operate and be active as S61FD. Look for 2-3 stations to be on the air on 40-15 meters all modes. If time permits, and there is the availability of hardware; he may also try 80 meters and possibly 160 meters. SPECIAL EVENT
A special event station, SN25SOL, is operating from the Gdansk Shipyard to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Solidarity (Solidarnosc), the social movement which changed the country (Poland) and Europe. The festivities will end on August 31st, 2005. The station is operating on all bands from 80-10 meters (CW, SSB and digital modes). Piotr, SP2AYC, is the QSL Manager (via PZK Bureau).

YO CONTEST
The Romanian Amateur Radio Federation (FRR) invites radio amateurs world-wide to participate in the annual YO DX HF Contest. The 24 hour contest is scheduled on Saturday, August 27th, 1200z - Sunday, August 28th, 1200z. Rules can be found on the following Web page at:

Hurry to Kure


The one-month-to-go date passed on the 15th of August and the team is
scurrying about putting the final touches on everything - the radios,
the antennas, computers, food.  Of course, the biggest and most important
part of the expedition is the transportation!  If that doesn’t pull through,
nothing else matters as we’ve seen several times in the past.  The rarer
the QTH, the more difficult the journey, it seems.  Could there be a
correlation here?


When one thinks of Kure Atoll at the far western end of the Hawaiian island
chain, the image of swaying palms, steel guitars, and various concoctions
of rum and fruit juice come to mind.  Nothing could be further from the
actual situation, I assure you!  First of all, Kure is a lot farther from
Honolulu than you might think - 1375 miles (2213 km)!  Travel the same
distance east from Honolulu instead and you’d be more than halfway back
to Los Angeles!


On the way to Kure, we’ll pass the islands of Kauai and Niihau, the western
edge of inhabitation, and then have a long open ocean run past Nihoa, the
last of the islands with a Hawaiian name. 400 km (250 miles) later, we
reach Necker Island, 393 miles from Honolulu.  Necker begins an increasingly
austere series of classic desert islands until Midway is reached.  A large
military base until 1993, Midway is being returned to its native state as
a national wildlife refuge.  From Midway, it’s about 60 miles further on
to our final destination Kure, the northernmost coral atoll in the world.

In the past, some DXpeditioners to Kure first flew to Midway via military
or tour aircraft and then took a boat to Kure. (There is a landing strip
at Kure from the Coast Guard LORAN station days, but it is no longer
maintained.)  These flights are no longer available, unfortunately.  The
expense of chartered aircraft ruled out that option, so it will be a
sailor’s life for us on board the Machias.  This name should ring a bell
to aficionados of Pacific DX, the Machias having carried the Kingman
Reef/Palmyra expedition in 2000.  Once again, Cap’n Bill Austin will be
in charge of a cargo of wild-eyed hamsters in hot pursuit of DX!


Our captain estimates that the trip will take about 9 days from Honolulu
to Kure, aided by the trade winds.  Weather at this time of year is expected
to be mild. You can keep an eye on Kure weather at

Coming back we’ll have to add another day or two; a total of 19 or more
days at sea.  We’ll all be an old salt (or maybe just smell like one) by
the time we get back to the land of the hula girls and ukelele.

During the voyage, we hope to be active as K7C/mm on the HF bands.  The
success of this phase of the operation depends on how we can best rig an
antenna aboard the Machias.  Operating at sea will be by-guess-and-by-golly,
but if the 6-watt, battery-powered rig of LI2B aboard the balsa raft
Kon-Tiki (Thor Heyerdahl’s pioneering adventure in 1947) could maintain
contact with North America as it floated westward from South America, then
I suspect that we can, too.


This sounds like quite a voyage, doesn’t it?  We’ll set sail on September
15th and won’t be seen again for a month!  Nevertheless, we’ll have all
of you to keep us company through the magic of ham radio.  See you on the
