4A, MEXICO
Alejandro, XE2BSS, informs OPDX that a group of Mexicans and one U.S. amateur radio operator will be activating the callsign, 4A2Q, from Imuris in the State of Sonora, Mexico (grid DM40). Operations start at 0300z on May 3th and will end at about 2200z May 4th. Modes of operation will be: CW, PSK31, RTTY and SSB. For this occasion, they will also be active for all passess on UO-14, FO-20 and FO-29 satellites; on the two last passes they will operate CW also. The group will also operate on all bands on HF from 160-10 meters. Operators mentioned are: Gerardo C. BALLOON EXPERIMENT
The Italian Amateur Radio Society - Milano Chapter (Associazione Radioamatori Italiani - Sezione di Milano) is proud to announce ARBE: Amateur Radio Ballooning Experiment. A special team will apply APRS technology for balloon ground position monitoring. During the same time a radio operator will fly onboard calling on the amateur radio VHF band (voice, USB) from the Mantova Airport. A special QSL card will be issued for all stations joining the event. QSL Manager will be given during the operations. The callsign used will be IQ2MI/p, and please check on 144.300 MHz +/- QRM USB starting at about 0800-0900z on May 10th. Flight should be 1-3 hours long. CASTLE ACTIVITY
Members of the "Clube Radioamadores do Entroncamento", will use the special callsign, CS7AL, and will be active May 31st from Castel Alcanede (DCFP reference C-112, DMHP reference SR-012 and DMP reference 1416 for the Portuguese Castles Award). Operation will be on 40 and 20 meter SSB. Castel Alcanede is located in the Province of Ribatejo. QSL via CT1BXE, direct or bureau.

CY9, ST. PAUL ISLAND
The CY9 DXpedition team is now complete. The operation will take place from July 24th to August 2nd, with an entry in the IOTA Contest. The team members are Robert/N0RN, Vance/N5VL, Igor/W0IZ, Joe/KO4RR, Andrea/K5AAH (YL), Alan/K5AB and Dale/VE7SV. They will be taking with them a Battle Creek Special and will operate on the low bands during all openings. Callsign will be given either at the beginning of the operation or shortly before. DAYTON HAMVENTION HAPPENINGS
The Northern Ohio DX Association (along with WVNO Radio) will once again sponsor a Hospitality Suite at this year's Dayton Hamvention. This year's Hospitality Suite will be dedicated to the memory of one of NODXA's "Silent Key" club members Jim Hire, W8ZET. Jim loved ham radio and enjoyed meeting his friends from around the world each year at Dayton. He was also a NODXA "Honorary Life Member" and was very involved with NODXA and the Hospitality Suite. This year Jim's wife, Janeen (now a new ham - KC8BRS) has decided to keep the tradition going and will provide some special memorabilia of Jim at the Hospitality Suite. Please stop by and visit. It will be in Suite 1011 on the 10th Club Floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel (old Stouffers) on Friday and Saturday evenings. All DXers/Contesters are welcome. FP, ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELON
Paul/K9OT and Peg/KB9LIE (YL op) are planning their third annual low-power DX vacation as FP/K9OT and FP/KB9LIE to Miquelon (NA-032) from July 27th-August 5th. This will include an entry by FP/K9OT in the CW North American QSO Party. They will operate both CW and SSB and concentrate on 160, 80, 40, 30, 17, 12, and 10 meters, which are in the greatest demand. Special attention will again be given to QRP stations, mobiles, and VK-ZL-JA-JT-Oceania. QSL via homecalls; bureau cards will be accepted. HS0, THAILAND
Charles Harpole, K4VUD, will once again activate his Thailand callsign, HS0ZCW, for the period of April 28th to about June 15th. He states, "Please note... WARC band operations in Thailand are NOT ALLOWED at the present time. Local hams are working on permissions." He also mentions that 80/160 meters operations are only during some contests and only then in small 3 kc windows, CW and SSB.

IOTA NEWS
AS-079. Taka, JR3TVH, will be active as JR3TVH/6, from Miyako Island (Miyako-gun, Sakishima Island, Okinawa-ken) from May 1-4th. Activity will be on 40-6 meters AM/CW/FM/RTTY/SSB. EU-125Mirko, DJ1AA, was active and scouting out the Island of Romo, located in the North Sea Coast Group (QTH of this Island is between Sylt [DL] and Mando Island [OZ]), last week. He plans to possibly be active from here for the upcoming IOTA Contest in July. Mirko is the Team Leader for a new IOTA contest group.

EU-136. There has been a slight change in plans!. Boro/9A3KB and Den/9A3FO, members of the IOCAGroup (The Islands of Croatia Activators Group) and the CTC (The Croatian Telegraphy Club), are planning to be active from five Croatian islands in the EU-136 group as homecall/p, between May 31st and June 4th. Their first island will be Sveti Marko (IOCA CI-117) May 31st. From May 31st to June 1st; they will be active from Krk Island (CI-046) and Voscica lighthouse (CLH 188, Loc: JN75HF); June 2nd and 3rd from Susak Island (CI-108) and Garba Lighthouse (WLHA LH-0444, CLH-031, Loc: JN74DM); June 3rd from Losinj Island (CI-058); June 3rd and 4th from Cres Island (CI-012, Grid JN74). Look for them on 80-10 meters, CW only. QSLs via the individual's home callsign, direct or bureau. No e-QSLs, please!

EU-148. Operators/Members of the Castres DX Gang (F5AUB, F5XX, F5BJW, F4CLO, F5JBR, F5UOE, F5BLP and F6DBX) will be active once more from the Fort Brescou Island (French Departments Award: Herault/34; French Provinces Award: Languedoc-Roussillon, DIFM ME-001, WLH0500, French Forts and Castles Award DFCF34001), from May 22-26th. Activity is planned for HF + 6 meters bands, SSB, CW, RTTY and PSK31. Ther will be at least 4 stations with beams, wires and amps (two on the air using SSB, one using CW and one using PSK31/RTTY/CW). The callsign will be F5XX/p. Two members of the crew (namely Bernard F5XX and Andre, F5JBR) will sign TM5B during the WPX Contest. OC-NEW. Operators Wen/YB2DGR and Rivai/YB2MTA will activate the Karimata Island Group (YB7 west) from July 24-30th (minimum operation is 5 days, which includes the IOTA Contest).

Their time of activity will be 12 hours a day as following the LH powered up (evening). Band activity will be on 15m (mainly SSB) and 20m (mainly CW). KH9, WAKE ISLAND
Jake, N6XIV/KH9, became active from Wake Island at 0740z on April 22nd. He came up on 14260 kHz and operated until after 0900z. This was his first operation since arriving on Wake, however, N6XIV/KH9 has been spotted on the internet DX Clusters on April 20th just before 1000z on 30 meters. Jake has confirmed that this station was definitely NOT N6XIV/KH9. There has also been spots on 40 meters CW. His QSL Manager advises that Jake DOES NOT work CW. DO NOT waste your time working and especially QSLing N6XIV/KH9 if heard on CW...it is NOT Jake. He will be on the air as work permits, roughly between 0700z to 0900z, most likely around 14260 kHz. Jake may attempt other bands, but that will be dictated by his very limited operating hours. Also, Jake states he will be on SSB only this trip. QSL via K2FF.

KP2, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
Ann/W2AZK and Brian/KF2HC from the North Jersey DX Association (NJDXA) will sign homecall/KP2 from St.Croix, June 12-19th. SSB and CW activity will be on 160-10 meters. LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY
Look for Jean Claude/F6HDH and Francis/F6HKS to be active from the following lighthouses which count for the Onshore French Lighthouses (DPLF) Award Program:
On May 2nd, starting 0700z from the Cap Ferret Lighthouse, PB049, FRA226.
On May 3rd, starting 0700z from the Hourtin Lighthouse, PB055, FRA105.
Jean-Claude, F6HDH, will use SSB on 40 and 20 meters. Francis/F6HKS, will use only CW on 30 meters. QSL via their home callsign, direct or via the French Bureau.

LX, LUXEMBOURG

M, ENGLAND
John Getz, AD8J, will be active as M/AD8J from England during the CQ WPX-CW Contest, May 24-25th. QSL to AD8J.

MJ, JERSEY
Operators Ekki/DF4OR, Tilman/DJ5BX and Rainer/DL1ZBO will be active from IOTA EU-109 from June 3-9th. They will be signing homecall plus the MJ prefix on CW, RTTY and SSB on 80-10 meters. On June 7-8th, with the callsign "MJ/DJ5BX", they will be participating in the ANARTS WW RTTY Contest. QSL via DL1ZBO, direct or Bureau.

OOOPPPSSS DEPARTMENT
The was a slight error (actually misunderstanding) in OPDX.607 under "3 YEAR DXPEDITION (Amazing Lady!)". Thanks to Terry, KK6T, for pointing it out. The "1946 Brewer" was a Brewer 46, which is 46 ft. Also, the "1932 Challenger" was a Challenger 32, which is 32 ft.

Ralph, K2PF, would like to remind readers that the correct QSL route for AP2ARS is via K2PF. Some are continuing to send via S53R, and due to Robert's travels, he is not able to respond to QSL requests.

Francois, F8DVD, has just returned from his DXpedition to Spitsbergen Island (EU-026) as JW/F8DVD. He would like to thank every ham radio who called him, especially all Japanese stations. Randy, W5UE, reports that the QSLs for the recent trip by the Magnolia DX Association to NA-082/MS002S (Cat Island, MS) as K5C are due from the printer any day now. Silvano, KB5GL, was active as KB5GL/5 from the Breton Islands (NA-089) this past week (April 25-26th). QSL via his home callsign (Silvano Amenta, 5028 Hearst Ave, Metaire, LA 70001, USA) or, for Europe only, via IZ8CCW (Antonio Cannataro, P.O.Box 360, 87100 Cosenza - CS, Italy).

Ray, W5EW, reports that he is QSL Manager for J79T (1989), VK9EW and VK9WB (1990) and V63BW (1992). Requests may be sent to W5EW at: Ray Husher, 202 Washington Ave, Thibodaux, La 70301. SASE is necessary or SAE and IRCs or one (1) USD. Ray will not respond to BUREAU cards. Ray states, "I only seek enough to cover the expense of mailing the QSL nothing extra is necessary."

XQ6ET QSL CHANGE. George, W8UVZ, reports, "XQ6ET (Bob) jumped the gun and changed his QSL route to my callsign without the process being complete - not my desired method but not much I can do at this point." George, W8UVZ, does state that he is in the process of taking over QSL chores for XQ6ET, all dates (But, "in the process"). He currently does not have logs nor any cards. Although, he understands the logs will be on their way soon. Also, XQ6ET was out of QSL cards, so they will have to be ordered. Ultimately, when George gets going, he will need a minimum SASE from U.S. stations, and SAE from DX stations with one new IRC or one greenstamp. George states, "It's going to be 6-8 weeks before cards for XQ6ET will flow from W8UVZ."

SPECIAL EVENT
Members of the Georgian ARC "Iveria" will activate the station 4L1W to commemorate the club's 5th anniversary, May 6-7th. Their activity will be on 20/17/15/10 meters CW/SSB. Check out their Web page at:

SPECIAL EVENT
Members of the Crimea Contest Club will activate the special event station, EO58JM, from the Ukraine between May 5-11th. Their activity is to celebrate 58 years since World War II. QSL will be via KG6AR.

SPECIAL EVENT
Wilfredo "Junior" Aviles, KP4ARN, reports that the members of the Caribbean Amateur Radio Group will celebrate their "Hamfest and Old Timers Recognition Day" on May 4th. The group will use the special callsign, K4C, for the event during May 3-17th. Look for them on the following suggested frequencies: 28370, 21370, 14270 and 7270 kHz. QSL via KP4ARN (please SASE).

SPECIAL EVENT
Between May 24th and June 1st, look for the special event station TM0AR to be active from the International Festival of Arts and Technologies in the Department of Sarthe (DDFM 72). Activity will be on the following HF bands: 10/12/15/17/20/40 meters SSB. QSL is via F5TJC, either via the Bureau or direct to: M. Briere-Lecomte J-L, 18 Le Petit St Louis, Route de Theligny, 72400 CORMES, France.

SPECIAL EVENT
The Siberian radio amateurs correspondence club "Radio-Prim" was created on May 15, 1993. Look for special event stations using the callsigns UE9OWQ and UE9ORQ to be active between May 10-18th to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the RPC, and between June 28-30th for the 110th anniversary of the capital of Siberia - Novosibirsk. TE75, COSTA RICA
In celebration of 75 years of amateur radio in Costa Rica, look for Costa Rican stations to operate using their callsigns with the special prefix TE75 from May 1-31st (2003). TX4, MARQUESAS ISLANDS
The Italian group is now active from OC-027 as TX4PG until May 9th. Activity will be on all HF bands, including 6 meters, and on CW/SSB/PSK/RTTY. Please refer to OPDX.597, OPDX.602 and OPDX.606 for more details and Web page.

XY, MYANMAR (AS-167 THANKS!)
Frank, DL4KQ (aka XY4KQ), has just returned home from his AS-NEW DXpedition to Myanmar (AS-167 THEBYUKYUN), and he wants to send out his thanks especially to all JA hams for a lot of very nice contacts. He states, "I really enjoyed the famous JA QSO discipline in pile-ups!!! THANK YOU !!!!!" However, Frank states, "Activation was unfortunately permitted only for 24 hours by local authorities but I was able to make 1750 QSOs during that short time. I hope to go back again to Myanmar next year (there exist still some other AS-NEW..) possibly with a bigger group to give a better service and a higher number of contacts."

YA, AFGHANISTAN
A few stations have been active from here over the past couple of weeks. Last week, Roberto, YN1BB, showed up as YN1BB/YA from Kabul on 15 meters (usually around/between 21260-21275 kHz after 1145z as last as 1630z). Also, active last week was Nick, G4KUX, as YA4F on 6 meters CW/SSB. Watch around 50.108-50.111 MHz between 1445-1630z. He will be here until April 2004. QSL via his home callsign. Hiro, JA1CQT, was heard the week before as YA1CQ on 17/15/12 meters. Watch around 18153, 21320 and 24955 kHz after 0730z and as late as 1600z. QSL via JA1CQT. "The Daily DX" reportedly states, Hiro, is in Kabul as part of the Basic Human Needs (BHN) contingent. He has been granted temporary permission to operate as YA1CQ until the end of May, but expects to be in Afghanistan for 12 months. The BHN is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) that helps with humanitarian relief efforts. Others associated with the BHN team include Ito "Dan" Sadao, JA1PBV. YA1JA is the BHN club callsign.

YI, IRAQ
The "ARRL Letter" reports that several radio amateurs, which include some of the world's top operators, are among the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) "Fast Intervention Team" (FITTEST). The personnel is already in Iraq or poised nearby. FITTEST is responsible for building a technical infrastructure to ensure WFP can move relief food supplies rapidly and safely. FITTEST also has a mandate to install or build basic technical networks, including such systems as VHF repeaters, satellite communications and HF fixed and mobile stations. The team also will set up radio rooms, rework administrative procedures, and assign call signs for all UN humanitarian-aid workers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) --other international aid organizations. However, any ham radio operations would be secondary to the WFP's efforts in Iraq. Operators mentioned are: Peter Casier/ON6TT (who's expected in Baghdad sometime this week), Robert Kasca/S53R, Mark Demeuleneere/ON4WW and Mats Persson/SM7PKK. Others who are ready to go to Iraq include Ed Giorgadze/4L4FN (aka P5/4L4FN), Patrick Pointu/F5ORF and Mark Tell/VK4KMT, who are just among several other FITTEST team members who are radio amateurs. ADDED NOTE: Peter, ON6TT, states in the ARRL Letter that Diya Sayah, YI1DZ (one of the primary operators at the Baghdad Radio Club's YI1BGD and the WFP's Baghdad telecommunications officer) is safe and well in Iraq. For more details, please read "The ARRL Letter", Vol 22, No 17.

Meanwhile, Willie, KV4EB, near Baghdad, was quite active over the past weekend as KV4EB/YI on 20/15 meters SSB, SSTV and PSK31. Watch the DX Clusters for QSNs at various times throughout the day.
