My recovery is still continuing (slow and sore). I have good days and bad (usually from over doing it from the day before). Again, I would like to thank the many "Welcome Back, Get Well Wishes and Holiday/New Year's Greeting" E-mail messages. There are too many to reply back (I truly "THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU"). CB4, CHILE (Rare Prefix)
Operator CE4FXY will be using a rare prefix in the CQ WW WPX SSB Contest (March 29-30th). Look for him to sign CB4Y as a Single-Op/Single Band (10m)/High Power entry. QSL via CE4FXY. Visit the Web site:

E20, THAILAND
Shelly/K2BS and Ray/G3NOM (HS0ZDZ) report that the station E20AJ is the callsign of the amateur radio station at the 20th World Scout Jamboree in Sattahip, Thailand, which will be activated by a large international contingent. The Jamboree amateur radio operation will take place officially from December 29th (2002) to January 7th (2003), but activity can be expected from the 26th December 2002 onwards. All modes will be covered with several stations operational. The usual amateur bands available in Thailand will be used (i.e. 40, 20, 15, 20, 2m, and the following segments on 80/160m - 3524-3526, 3534-3536, 1834-1836 kHz). Some earlier reports mentioned WARC band operation, but this will not take place. However, there are some conflicting reports on the WARC/Low Band operations. Masa/JI1CUJ, the International Service Team staff of E20AJ, informed OPDX of the following:"With strong support from RAST and Government of Thailand, we will have fantastic license condition. Operation on 1.8 and 3.5 Mhz is usually severely restricted in Thailand, and is only permitted during contest. The WARC band are not permitted in Thailand. However, there is an information that the license of E20AJ covers all HF bands including WARC bands. We are trying to QRV on WARC and LOW bands as far as possible." The only thing we can tell OPDX readers is to listen and hope they are active on the WARC bands. The International Scouting Frequencies will be the preferred frequencies (i.e. 7090, 14290, 21360, 28390, 28990). The QSL Manager for DIRECT cards only is HB9AOF. EY8, TAJIKISTAN
Nodir, EY8MM, reports that he will be active in the CQ 160-Meter CW Contest (January 24-26th). QSL via K1BV.

FG, GUADELOUPE
Pierre, F6FXS, will be active once more from his son's QTH on the main island (IOTA NA-102 - DIFO FG001) as FS/F6FXS between February 12th and March 12th. He will be on holiday, but his activity will be CW. Pierre will run about 30 watts from an IC-706 and into a wire antenna. Search for him in the morning and the evening (local time) on 40-10 meters bands, but mainly around 14030, 18070, 21030 or 28030 kHz +/- QRM. QSL either direct or via the bureau. The address in the Buckmaster's call book, either on CD or online is correct.

FR, REUNION ISLAND (Attention!)
Freddy, F5IRO, is expected to be active as FR/F5IRO through February 2003. Word has it that he will try to obtain permission to be active from Juan da Nova and Glorioso.

HC1, ECUADOR
Andy, NP3D, will be active as HC1/NP3D from Quito, Ecuador, from January 22-27th. Activity will be on CW/SSB on all HF bands including the WARC bands and 6 meters. He will also be in the CQ 160-Meter CW Contest (January 24-26th) as a low power class entry. QSL via W3HNK.

IOTA NEWS
AS-079. Takeshi, JI3DST, will be active as JI3DST/6 from Miyako Island (Miyako-jima Hirara-City Okinawa-ken) now through January 6th. Activity will be on 40/17/15/12/10/6 meters SSB. Look for him on 40 meters (7060-7070 kHz) between 1900-2200z. QSL via the bureau the Bureau.

EU-048. Jean-Marc, F5SGI, will be active from Groix Island (DIFM AT-012) April 13-19th. Activity will be CW only. QSL via the bureau or direct.

OC-201. Bert, PA3GIO, will be active as ZL1/PA3GIO/p from Waiheke Island OC-201 on January 10, 2003, ONLY. Activity will be on 20/17/15/12/10 meters SSB only. He will be using a Kenwood TS-50 with only a 100 watts. QSL (preferably) by E-mail to:

OC-130
OC-235. Stuie, VK8NSB, informs OPDX that Chris, VK3FY/DU8, is active on Mindanao Island (OC-130) as of December 26th and will be active on and off from OC-235 as VK3FY/DU8 as of January 1st. Day operations will be 0800-1800 local time, but there is a possibility of an overnight stay. The island that Chris will be on (OC-235) has elements of Rebels on it, and he does not want to publish the Exact location (name of Island). IOTA has confirmed that this Island will be OK for OC-235 credit. Stuie is appointed the Contact (Pilot) for all information at:

Alan, K4AVQ, is expected to be active as P40AV this coming weekend. Activity will be between January 4-18th on 160-10 meters with an emphasis CW and on 80/160 meters. QSL via K4AVQ.

Activity by GB2APL during the past weekend was from Anvil Point Lighthouse (L/H Number ENG - 001). This special callsign was used during the International Lighthouses and Lightships event. Gwen, VK3DYL, QSL Manager for the VK9YL and ZK1XYL (the all-YL DXpeditions in September/October), reports that all direct requests (with return postage) received prior to Christmas Day have been mailed back. Gwen also wishes to advise that it is the group's policy only to accept QSL cards received direct or via the VK3 Bureau, not as E-QSLs.

S2, BANGLADESH (Update)
Remember to look for Eric, VA7DZ, this week as S2/VA7DZ. He will be working from Dhaka and Sylhet between January 1-7th. Also, he is expected to be active from St. Martin's Island (IOTA AS-127), January 3-4th. Activity will be QRP. QSL via VA7DZ.

SILENT KEY
It is sad to report that Victor Rusinov, UT8LL (UB5LGM), became a Silent Key this past week. He died in a plane crash on December 23rd near Esfahan while on a business trip to Iran. Dxers and members of the IOTA community will mourns his sudden passing. OPDX and its readers would like to send out their deepest sympathy to Victor's family and friends.

SPECIAL EVENT
The callsign ZS90SAP will be active from January 1st through December 31st, 2003, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the South African Police Service. The SAPS was established in 1913 with the objective to enforce law and order and to ensure a save and secure environment for all the people of South Africa. Members of the Vaal Triangle Amateur Radio Club, under the leadership of Jan Swanepoel, ZS6ZYM, will operate ZS90SAP during 2003. The callsign will be active on the 80/40/20/10 meters as well as 6/2 meters and 70-cm. QSL cards will only be sent on receipt of your QSL card. ST, SUDAN
Chris, DL5NAM, informs OPDX that after solving many problems, a German team has finally received permission and a license for Sudan. The German team will be using the callsign ST0RY (Sierra Tango Zero Radio Yankee) and will start their operation in March and stay approx. 3 weeks (+/-); also, they will be active in the WPX Contest. Their tickets are in hand; first material is on the way there. Their focus for this DXpedition will be the Low Bands, WARC Bands, RTTY and 6 meters (in this order). The German team consists of: Falk/DK7YY (CW), Dietmar/DL3DXX (CW), Uwe/DL9NDS (SSB/RTTY), Felix/DL7FER (SSB/CW) and Chris/DL5NAM (SSB/RTTY). Currently, they have plans for 3 HF stations (with amps), 3 Quarter Wave GP for the Low Bands, some Yagis for 10-20 meters (incl. WARC) and some wire.

However, they would like to do better and are asking the ham community for help. Any help with used/new HF/UHF equipment is welcome, and also study material for hams to get their license. They will leave some materials for the national amateur radio club there. Also, they are looking for donations from DX clubs/associatons to help reduce the high cost of transportation. A web page will be available with a online log search thanks to DF3CB (also a possible 24 hour internet connection maybe available to them). SOTA NEWS
Andrew, ZS1AN, reports that South Africa has been incorporated into the "Summits on the Air" (SOTA) program effective January 1, 2003. To celebrate, a number of South African amateurs will be operating portable from mountain summits on January 1st. Rudi, ZS6DX, will operate from Magalliesberg (ZS/GP-008), Andrew, ZS1AN, will be operating from Maclear's Beacon on Table Mountain (ZS/WC-043), and it is likely that other summits will be active as well. They can be found on or around the following frequencies:
CW: 7024, 14007, 21007 and 28007 kHz
SSB: 7066, 14160, 21160 and 28440 kHz
FM: 145.500 MHz Simplex
Please note that not all summits will be active on SSB. Summits will be actived from 0900z until 1600z on January 1, 2003. For further information about SOTA in South Africa, see their web site at:

ZK2, NIUE
Bert, PA3GIO, will be active as ZK2GI on Niue Island (pronounced 'new-ay'), IOTA OC-040, approximately from January 18-26th using his Kenwood TS-50 with only a 100 watts and a Doublet Antenna. Activity will be on 20/17/15/12/10 meters SSB only. He hopes there will be propagation to Europe approximately 0800-1400z peaking around 1100z. ZK3, TOKELAU ISLANDS
Atsu, 5W1SA, is currently active as ZK3SA. His length of stay is not known. His activity over the past week has be on 40/30/20/17/15/12 meters CW, with some RTTY. QSL via JH7OHF.

ZK3, TOKELAU ISLANDS (New IOTA)
Marius, IZ8DBJ, reports that he will be heading here between February 1-8th and posssibly activate a new IOTA. His callsign will be ZK3DJ. QSL via home callsign direct ONLY.

ZL1AMO UPDATE
Judy Roush, AA7UC, continues to update us on Ron's, ZL1AMO condition. Ron still remains in isolation and continues to fight the ESBL infection, slowly but surely, he continues to improve. Intravenous feeding has been discontinued, and Ron is now eating solid food. Physically, Ron is still weak, but he is able to communicate with his family with the use of a mobile phone. Ron is anxious to resume his radio activities, and he continues to ask the family if they are receiving E-mails from the amateur radio community! Terri (Ron's daughter) has asked INDEXA to forward the Wright family's sincerest wishes to all for a blessed Christmas and a happy, peaceful, and prosperous new year. Judy also reports on behalf of the International DX Association (INDEXA) a "thank you" for your tremendous outpouring of support for Ron and his family. As of December 23rd, the ZL1AMO Air Ambulance Fund is within 5,000 USD of reaching its goal of 20,000 USD. Funds received as of this date have been forwarded to the air ambulance account in New Zealand, and INDEXA has covered the expenses involved in the transfer of funds so that every penny donated has gone directly to Ron's special account in New Zealand.

The 1st East Asia 160/80m DX contest

CW (only):2003: January 11 0900UTC - January 12 2200UTC
(2004: January 10 0900UTC- January 11 2200UTC)
(Second weekend of January: Saturday 0900UTC- Sunday 2200UTC)

1. Objective
For the amateurs out of the East Asia to contact the East Asia (CQ Zone 19 portion of UA0, Zone 25 + JD1/Ogasawara) amateurs on the low band (80 and 160m) CW.

2. Bands and mode
80 and 160m bands CW only.

3. Type of competition (choose one)
Single operator category only. No multi operator category for the competition. No output power categories. All of the operation, logging and other contest related actions are performed by one person. Only one transit signal is allowed at any one time.

a. Single operator Multi band
More than one receiver can be used at same time. Quick QSY between the bands is allowed, however, alternate CQing on two bands by logging software is forbidden. Any of information on Internet can be used. Passive (self-spotting not allowed) use of DX spotting nets is allowed. Verbal information exchange of VHF/UHF net is allowed.

b. Single operator Single band (160m or 80m)
Requesting QSY on the other band is not allowed. Any of information on Internet can be used. Passive (self-spotting not allowed) use of DX spotting nets is allowed. Verbal information exchange of VHF/UHF net is allowed.

c. Single operator Conservative
This is a restricted single operator category. Multi band category only. Only one transceiver, or one set of transmitter/receiver can be used. More than one receiver, or dual-watch function is not allowed to use. The operator has to be the licensee of the station. No guest operator is allowed. Club station (license) is not allowed to use for this category. Any of information exchange, either Internet, DX spotting or verbal communication on VHF/UHF, is not allowed. The entrants of this category shall take an oath of the operating conditions described above. The entrants will be treated as non-Conservative one upon any of objection. Refutation against the objection shall be done by the said entrant with concrete evidence.

4. Number exchange
RST + CQ Zone number.

5. Multiplier
For East Asia entrants: A multiplier of one (1) for each different DXCC country and CQ Zone contacted on each band. Maritime mobile stations count only for a zone multiplier.

For DX (not East Asia) entrants: A multiplier of one(1) for each different East Asia Region, listed below, contacted on each band.

6. Points
For East Asia entrants:
Contacts with stations in Asia (except East Asia) on 80m are worth One (1) point.
Contacts with stations in Asia (except East Asia) on 160m are worth Three (3) points.
Contacts with stations in Europe, Oceania or North America on 80m are worth Three (3) points.
Contacts with stations in Europe, Oceania or North America on 160m are worth Nine (9) points.
Contacts with stations in Africa or South America on 80m are worth Six (6) points.
Contacts with stations in Africa or South America on 160m are worth eighteen (18) points.

For DX entrants:
Contacts with stations in East Asia on 80m are worth Ten (10) points.
Contacts with stations in East Asia on 160m are worth Thirty (30) points.

Contacts with maritime mobile (/MM) stations are permitted for multiplier credit but have zero (0) point value.

7. Scoring
The final score is the result of the total QSO points multiplied by the sum of multipliers.

8. Awards
For East Asia entrants: Entrants with excellent scores in each Region may be awarded; Minimum one third of the score of the country winner is required.

For DX entrants: Entrants with excellent scores in each CQ Zone may be awarded; Minimum one third of the score of the continental winner is required.

9. Trophies
Winner of each category may be awarded the trophies.

10. Log instructions
a. All times must be in UTC
b. All sent and received exchanges are to be logged
c. Logs must be checked for duplicate contacts, correct QSO points and multipliers.
d. Submit your electronic log in the Cabrillo format created by all major logging programs as an attachment of an e-mail. Be sure to put the STATION CALLSIGN and the CATEGORY (single band [80 or 160m], all band or all band Conservative) in the Subject: line of each message. Submit your log to ja1ely@bb.mbn.or.jp

11. Deadline
All entries must be postmarked no later than February 15, 2003. e-mail submission should be sent to ja1ely@bb.mbn.or.jp.
