4W, EAST TIMOR
Carlos, 4W/CU3FT, was active this past weekend on 17 and 12 meters. Watch around 24945 kHz a little before 1500z and 18142 kHz around 1330z. Also, Thor, 4W6MM, was active this past weekend on 15 meters RTTY. Watch around 21082 kHz after 0400z.

A25, BOTSWANA
You still have a few days to work Baldur/DJ6SI and Hans/ DL1YFF as A25/homecall. Their activity has been on 160-10 meters CW (DJ6SI only) and SSB/RTTY (DL1YFF). QSL via their home callsigns.

DU1, PHILIPPINES (IOTA Op)
Gerard, F2JD/G0SHN, and Yannick, F6FYD, will be active from an island for the Calamian group (OC-090). They will be there from April 26-29th. Operations will be 100 watts and with a dipole on SSB and CW as DU1/G0SHN. QSL via F6AJA.

DXCC NEWS
Jay/AF2C and Stu/WA2MOE, reported this week that the ARRL has notified Kan, JA1BK, that the VP6DI operation has been accepted for DXCC credit. Cards may be submitted on or after June 1, 2002.

FP, ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELON
Linda/VE9GLF and Len/VE9MY will be active from here at the end of July. They will take part in the IOTA Contest. FP's IOTA is NA-032.

HS, THAILAND (WARC bands)
Ray Gerrard, HS0/G3NOM, reports that "Thai WARC allocations now in legal limbo. Unlikely to be assigned for another two years." Ray writes, "The Thai Post and Telegraph Department (PTD) of the Ministry of Transport and Communications responsible for amateur radio administration has already agreed in principle to the assignment of the WARC band to amateur radio services. In recent years they have moved other users out of these bands. However, all significant changes to tele- communications rules, regulations or laws in Thailand are now on hold, pending the establishment of a National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) that the 1997 Thai Constitution had mandated to be appointed not later than October 2000. This process was delayed, however, after the Thai Upper House, the Senate, rejected all those nominated to the commission after allegations that there had been irregularities in the selection process. (The Senate had been charged with selecting 7 of 14 nominees to this all-powerful body.) Since then, the process has been derailed and while PTD has been looking after the best interests of radio amateurs in Thailand, it is unable to make changes to frequency assignments. At the time of writing, it is unknown when the commission will be appointed or when it can begin to take decisions, but informed sources in Thailand's telecommunications sector doubt that the body will be established within one year, while a decision by the commission on a relatively low-priority item such as WARC band allocations would take additional time as a backlog of legislation grows. RAST now estimates that it will be at least two years before we can expect WARC bands or any other amateur bands to be authorized in Thailand and the society will release any news of positive developments to the international amateur community."

IOTA NEWS
AS-017. Shigeru, JI3CEY/6, will be active from Okinawa Island, April 27-30th. Activity will be on 40/20/17/12/10/6 meter SSB and CW. QSL via the JARL bureau, not direct to home callsign

AS-079. Taka, JR3TVH, will be active as JR3TVH/6 from April 27th through May 2nd from Miyako Island, MIYAKO-gun (county), Miyako Archipelago, Okinawa Island. Activity will be on 40, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 (custom HB9CV and Sigma 5) and 6 meters (F9FT) with SSB as the main mode, but possibly other modes like RTTY. His Yagi antenna will be kept pointed to the NW, N (if LP open, SE). Look for him at JA gray zone centered from 2200z (morning) and 0700z (evening). QSL via the Bureau (the best), or direct to: Taka Sawaguchi, 22-81-406 Fuseya 3, Izumi Osaka 594, Japan (QRZ.com and Buckmaster online database).

EU-006. Members of Limerick Radio Club will be active from the Aran Islands as as EJ0A from May 24-26th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters CW/SSB. A 6 meter operation is also planned. QSL via either EI8EM or W2ORA direct or via Bureau.

EU-032. Look for Bernard, F5XX, to be active as F5XX/p from Aix Island, May 13-20th. Other reference numbers are AT-023 (French Islands Award) and DFCF 17013 Fort de la Rade (French Castles award). Activity will be on 80-10 meters CW/SSB. QSL are 100%; Bernard prefers the bureau way, but if you try direct he will answer too.

EU-091. Alfredo, IK7JWX, is waiting for a reply from the military authority for permission to operate from Isola di Sant'Andrea. If Alfredo receives the permission, he and the "Salento DX Team" will be active April 27th and 28th from Islola di Sant'Andrea (IIA LE-01, WLH LH-0075 and ARLHS ITA-084). QSL via IK7JWX.

EU-148. Bernard/F5XX and the Castres DX Gang will be on the air as F5XX/p from May 23-27th, from the Languedoc-Roussillon Region, Fort Brescou. Other reference numbers are DIFM ME001 (French Islands Award), DFCF 34001 (French Castles Award) and WLH 0500 (World Lighthouses Award). The crew is composed of F5XX, F5AUB, F5BJW, F5UOE and possibly 2 or 3 other hams may join them, but they aren't known at the moment. Activity will be on 160-10 meters CW/SSB/PSK31/RTTY. QSL 100% Bureau or direct. ADDED NOTE: The crew will enter the CQ WPX CW Contest as TM5B; Multi-Operators/One Transmitter/Low Power.

IU7, ITALY (Special Prefix/Event)
During the weekends of June, August, October and December, look for the special callsign IU7LE to be used by the Leece and Salento DX Team to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the National A.R.I. Activity will be on the HF and WARC bands CW/SSB. A special QSL will be available via I7PXV, by the bureau or direct.

KH1, BAKER ISLAND
By the time you read this, the KH1 team was expected to meet together in Los Angeles on April 20th and depart to Nadi, Fiji Island. Some of the team will fly to Funafuti, Tuvalu (T2), to operate for three days. The whole team will once again meet and depart from Funafuti on April 26th and will arrive on Baker Island on April 29th or 30th and operate until May 10th. They will take a six day voyage back to Fiji and then fly to Los Angeles and finally onto the Dayton Hamvention. The team will have six transceivers, five amplifiers, four generators and a variety of beams, verticals and dipoles. They have plans to operate on 160-6 meters CW, SSB, RTTY, PSK, SSTV, FM and the satellites. The callsign will be announced when the operation starts. QSL all CW, RTTY, PSK and SSTV QSOs via YT1AD and all SSB QSOs via RZ3AA. Donations can be sent to Wil, K6NDV. Their Web page is:

KH9, WAKE ISLAND
It has been reported that Terry, K7ASU, is expected to operate as K7ASU/KH9 starting around April 27th for approximately 4 weeks. Apparently, he is there to work, so he will be active in his spare time, most likely between 0700-0900z. QSL via K7ASU.

LIGHTHOUSE NEWS

OJ0, MARKET REEF
Look for Seppo/OH1VR and Lars/OH0RJ to be active as OJ0VR, (if all goes as planned) May 8-9th. They will use 100 watts and a FD4 windom. This may be a short 12 hrs operation. Their purpose for going there is to check their generator and other equipment.

OX, GREENLAND
Look for Per, OZ1EQC, to be active now through May 8th as OX/OZ1EQC. His activity will be on 80/40/30/20/15/10 meters on CW, RTTY, PSK31 and SSTV. He also has plans to operate and activate Greenland's Coastal Islands Groups, NA-134 (Northwest) and NA-220 (Southwest). QSL via OZ1EQC.

P5, NORTH KOREA (Going to 3W and HS)
Ed, P5/4L4FN continued to be active for a few days last week on 21225 kHz before becoming ill, so there was no weekend activity. However, there will be no P5 activity during this week. Ed will be on a trip to Vietnam and Thailand from April 23rd until May 4th. He may try to be on the air from those countries.

QSL INFO AND NEWS
The Radio Club Ushuaia will have the special callsign AY8XW for the rest of 2002. The QSL Manager for AY8XW is Patrick, WD9EWK, and he will accept cards sent directly to him or through the QSL bureau. PLEASE NOTE: Patrick is "NOT" the QSL Manager for contacts with the normal club callsign, LU8XW. EA5BD is the QSL Manager for these contacts with LU8XW. Steve, N3SL, announced that his daughter, Kim, who has handled cards for AH1A, 3B6RF, GM4YXI, GM3WOJ, and GS2MP, has been chosen by Pat, HH2PK, to take care of his QSLs. Pat is no longer active (and hasn't been since Jan 1998) and has moved from Haiti to Canada. They received all of Pat's logs this past week, which include contest logs, from April 1989 to November 29, 1997. Unfortunately, the December 1997 and January 1998 logs (his last 2 months on the air) were corrupted and cannot be recovered. Boris, T93Y, informs OPDX that some operators have sent their direct requests for FG/T93M and T93M/HI9 operations to T93M CBA (P.O. Box 59, Sarajevo BA-71000, Bosnia and Herzegovina) instead of Danny's QSL Manager, DJ2MX (Mario Lovric, Am Oelberg 11, D-61231, Bad Nauheim, Germany). All requests received in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be forwarded to DJ2MX once a month, so those operators could expect some delay.

Larry, KJ4UY/V47UY, advises that he is not the QSL Manager for V44NK, Karl Sage. QSL V44NK direct only as they do not have a QSL bureau in St. Kitts/Nevis. However, Larry is the QSL Manager for V47UY only.

Luis, LU9XT, in Ushuaia, on the Island of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina, informs OPDX that he has designated Patrick Stoddard, WD9EWK, as his QSL Manager for cards sent directly or through the QSL bureaus for him. His entries in QRZ.com and Buckmaster now show WD9EWK as his QSL Manager, and the information for WD9EWK is correct at those web sites as well as in the Radio Amateur Callbook since 1997.

P5 QSL UPDATE
It been reported that Bruce Paige, KK5DO, the QSL Manager for Ed Giorgadze, P5/4L4FN in North Korea says he expects to receive the first printing run of P5/4L4FN QSL cards this week and hopes to have all QSLs out by May 1. As mentioned last week, Bruce states that any stateside operator who mails for a QSL after May 15 must include 37 cents postage to cover the new first-class mail rate going into effect June 30. He has received 2900 requests for the P5 QSL cards, but Ed, P5/4L4FN, has made more than 6000 QSOs during his stay in North Korea. Remember, Ed will be there until June 2003 and only SSB contacts with P5/4L4FN have been approved for DXCC credit.

VP6DI LOG UPDATE.
The complete log is up now. However, there was an interesting disppearance of the log in the middle of last week. According to Jay, AF2C, he was told by Kan, JA1BK, that apparently a "hacker" managed to get into the Web site and stole all the data. The site was down only "temporarily". Ken Holdom, ZL4HU (also ZL2HU), Group Organizer/Team Leader/QSL Manager, reports that the Kermadec DX Association is continuing to receive QSL cards for the ZL8RI Raoul Island (May 1996) and ZL9CI Campbell Island (January 1999) DXpeditions. Unfortunately, a good number of these cards are being sent to their old addresses in Wellington, New Zealand. Their current address, as it has been since May 2000, is as follows: Kermadec DX Association, P.O. Box 7, Clyde, Central Otago, New Zealand. This will be the only QSL address for their NEXT DXpedition to ZL7 in October 2002.

SPECIAL EVENT
Look for special event station TM0AR to be active from May 1-13th to celebrate the International Festival of Arts and Technologies (Departement 72). No bands or modes of activity were provided. QSL via F5TJC via the bureau or direct to:

SPECIAL EVENT (International Marconi Day)
Remember next Saturday, April 27th, is International Marconi Day. Many stations should be active to celebrate this event. Look for the Maritime Radio Historical Society to operate special event station K6KPH using the original transmitters, receivers and antennas of ex-RCA coast station KPH. Suggested frequencies will be 7050, 14,050 and 21050 kHz and occasionally 3545 kHz. QSLs for K6KPH and reception reports go to: D.A. Stoops, PO Box 381, Bolinas CA 94924-0381. SPECIAL EVENT AND ACTIVITY
The special callsign VC3T has been assigned to Bob, VE3AGC, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Ottawa Tulip Festival. This callsign is valid from April 20th to May 19th, 2002. Bob and Sam, VE3XAP, were operating the Ontario QSO Party over the past weekend and were expected to activate several counties as follows: Hamilton, Niagara, Halton, Wellington, Peel and Toronto, York, Simcoe and Dufferin, with a possible extension to Durham. Expect activity to be on 160-6 meters as well as 2 meters and 70cm.

SPECIAL GERMAN NAVAL AND AMATEUR EVENT
OPDX has been informed that plans for a special event transmission from DHJ61 (German Navy Communications School in Flensburg-Muerwik) will take place May 4th at 1000z and May 5th at 1500z. They will transmit a one-way broadcast (with historic items about the German and International Naval Forces etc..) to celebrate the 25th year jubilee of the MF Runde (German Amateur Radio Club of ex-Naval Radio Operators) and 100 years of Naval Communication School (also, the sad event of the closing of the school in September 2002). Their transmit frequencies are:

SV9, CRETE
Look for Seppo, OH1VR, to be active April 22-29th as SV9/OH1VR/P. This operation will be CW only. QSL via OH1VR, CBA.

V31, BELIZE
Hugh/K0GHK and Roger/WA0ETE will be returning to Ambergis Caye (NA-073) April 23rd through May 2nd using the callsign V31KQ. Look for them on both SSB and CW, especially on the higher frequency bands. QSL via WA0ETE.

VK9ML, MELLISH REEF
Don, N1DG, VK9ML North American Pilot, states that the activity began with 5 stations coming on the air at 1000z April 15th, after a day of hectic setup. Last report viewed stated their logs have been updated on the Web site April 21th at 0917z. A low band report from Eric, K3NA, states, "We listen for USA every night from 0830z and SA at 0730z. Worked 1 HC8 but keep listening. QRN was a problem first night, but reasonable since. Only have a few east coast in log, many west coast, but no one has been really LOUD yet. We're on continuously from 0800 to 1300z. We work a few JA's if there are no US to work, but call again after a few minutes. Big EU openings on 18th and 20th. 105 EU's in log. Openings as far as F and ON, no G's yet. Openings seem to start with ON's and spread. Today's EU opening (April 20) was from 1810 to 1940z. So tell those top-band dogs to get their butts down there, line up, and work us :-) ". There has been a revised and a progressive shut down (QRT) which will now commence local Wednesday morning with the intention to sail out on high tide Thursday. This is one day earlier than previously advised, but it's still a two day extension on the original QRT date! One HF station will be kept running as long as possible while other equipment is being de-rigged and packed around it. For up-to-date infor, watch their Web page at:

VK0, MACQUARIE ISLAND
Bob, VK2SOB, wants to remind everyone to keep an ear out for Peter, VK0MQI. He worked him on 17 meters with very poor propagation. He told Bob that he would be there for 11 months. Cluster spots also show Peter has been active on 15 and 10 meters, usually between 0430 and 0600z, but with a weak signal. Watch 21210, 21295 and 28630 kHz.

VP9, BERMUDA
Look for Tom, W9AEB, to be active as VP9/W9AEB until April 28th. Activity will be on 20-10 meters CW/SSB. QSL via WF9V

. YK, SYRIA
Saad, N5FF, informs OPDX that he plans to leave for Damascus this Friday, April 26th, and will be arriving there on Sunday, April 28th. He plans to setup a simple station, bare foot into a short G5RV, hoping to be on the air from May 1-11th. He may possibly extend his stay for few more days up to one week. His callsign will be YK1BA. QSL via N5FF. Saad states that the purpose of this trip is not radio, so his operating will be very spotty and not extensive at all. He hopes to be able to operate at least 2-3 hours a day. He is thinking he will limit his operating to 20 meters, unless the propagation is better on other bands (40-10 meters) at the time. He will work NA around his sunrise local time, that's 0200-0300z, Europe and others in the afternoon local, that's 1200-1300z, and late evenings local, that's 2100-2200z. Saad will try to be around 14195 kHz on SSB, and 14045 on CW, split listening 5KHz up.

ARRL Debuts Expanded Online Contest Coverage

The ARRL is proud to announce the introduction of expanded online coverage of ARRL contests effective April 19, 2002. The URL for expanded ARRL Contest coverage is http://www.arrl.org/contests/results/. ARRL staff members and volunteers have spent many months in planning and developing this expanded online resource to provide more detailed, in-depth coverage of ARRL events on the Web. Expanded ARRL Contest coverage online supplements coverage in QST.

The first contest results presented in the expanded online format are the 2001 ARRL November Sweepstakes, CW. The online presentation features:

* An interactive, searchable database of the line scores. In addition to the information normally presented in QST, you can see band-by-band QSO breakdowns, hours operated, check and club affiliation for each entry. The database is searchable by call sign, entry class, ARRL Section or Division, and club. You can sort the results by many criteria, including call, score, QSOs, multipliers, or band QSOs.

* Expanded Soapbox comments. In the initial presentation, Soapbox comments from all of the electronic Cabrillo entries are included. For future contests, the Soapbox tools will be available for entrants to add their comments or photos immediately after the contest.

* An expanded version of the contest write-up that appears in QST. Written by noted competitor Randy Thompson, K5ZD, the expanded write-up goes into much more detail than the typical QST presentation. Also included are station descriptions for the top 10 entrants in each single-op category, a sidebar story about the log checking process by K5ZD and a sidebar about the history of the November Sweepstakes by Doug Grant, K1DG.

* Updated contest category records. Ken Adams, K5KA, and Dave Clemons, K1VUT, have teamed up to provide updated November Sweepstakes records for each entry class and ARRL Division and Section, as well as overall category records.

The new features add to existing online resources for contesters, including complete ARRL contest rules and forms, the ARRL Contest Calendar, and the Contest Corral listing of contests throughout the year. ARRL Members may also subscribe to the ARRL Contest Rate Sheet, a bi-weekly e-mail newsletter that debuted in March 2002.

ARRL Contests Online is considered a "work in progress." The online presentation will be flexible, allowing us to improve the site as it develops.
