MAJOR DX NEWS FLASHES
DXCC NEWS RELEASE (November 16, 2001) from Bill Moore, NC1L..... New DXCC Entity - Ducie Island. The IARU has announced the addition of its latest member-society, The Pitcairn Amateur Radio Association (PIARA). In March 2001, the PIARA filed an application with IARU Region 3 asking for membership in the IARU. This matter went to a vote of the IARU member-societies worldwide in June, and the result of the vote was announced today. As a result of the addition of PIARA as an IARU member-society, a new DXCC Entity has been created. Under DXCC rules, an entity that is represented by an IARU society gains the status of "Political Entity." In changing from a geographic separation to a political DXCC Entity, certain distance requirements for additional separations change. As a result, Ducie Island, a part of the Pitcairn Islands, becomes a new DXCC Entity. Effective 0000Z, November 16, 2001, Ducie Island is added to the DXCC Entity List. Only QSOs dated November 16, 2001 and later will count for this Entity. QSL cards for DXCC credit will be accepted beginning June 1, 2002.

ADDED NOTES BY EDITOR: Ducie Island in the South Pacific is the latest DXCC entity; the 335th. According to an ARRL DX Bulletin, ARRL Membership Services Manager Wayne Mills, N7NG, emphasized that only contacts dated November 16, 2001, and later will count for DXCC. The island has been activated previously for the Islands On The Air program (its IOTA OC-182), but Mills says those earlier contacts will not count for DXCC. Also, by the time you read this, the VP6/D operation should be active. The VP6/D team did have some delays due to bad weather conditions. This will cut into the days of operating, and according to some press releases, the operation will not be extended. They will probably end the operation on November 22nd or 23rd, because they must be back on Gambiers on November 27th. The lastest update as this bulletin was being prepare states that the team was leaving Pitcairn Island on Sunday, November 18th around 1500z. Depending of the strength of the head winds, they will arrive at Ducie sometime between just before dawn and just after sunset, which is between 1200z November 19th and 0300z November 20. The first station should come on 14195 kHz, so monitor there. Those who need the LAT/LONG information for Ducie Island, they are: 24 39'57"S 124 48'21"W

P5, NORTH KOREA
Yes, P5 is active. What a way to end the year and a treat for DXers around the world to hear. A station in North Korea, which ranks #1 on most everyone's most wanted list, appeared on the bands last weekend. Actually, attempts were made as early as November 4th (according to Bruce, KK5DO 's Web page) but with no success. The reports indicate that Ed, 4L4FN, who works for the UN World Food Program, has tried over the last 2 years to get permission to operate. He has finally been able to get a verbal permission to operate amateur radio and to bring his equipment into North Korea. He is currently active as P5/4L4FN. However, we all know that veral permission is not good enough for DXCC credit. The Web page states Ed is now awaiting written permission, which is expected to arrive around Christmas. At the present, Ed is only active on SSB only using a dipole and his preferred frequencies are 14205 and 28575 kHz (running split, 15-35 kHz up), but it seems to be mostly on 10 meters. Suggested times are between 1400-1500z and 2200-2300z. The reason for short operating times are Ed has a day job which occupies 12 hours of his time. Ed indicates that during the winter months there are many power outages, and he may not be able to get on the air. He will be leaving around Christmas time (December 22nd-January 18th) to return home for a short vaction. Upon his return, he will bring PSK232 modem for the digital modes. 8P, BARBADOS
John, K4BAI, will be operating again from the Warleigh Plantation signing 8P9HAT from November 20-27th. He hopes to get the callsign 8P9Z for the CQWW CW Contest. QSL via bureau.

9K, KUWAIT
Mike, DL1HCM, will be active as 9K9X in the CQWW DX CW Contest as a Single Op/All Band entry. The operation will be an activity of the Bavarian Contest Club BCC.

C6, BAHAMAS
Joe, W4SAA, will be active as W4SAA/C6A now through November 27th. During the CQWW CW DX Contest, Joe and Dick, N4RP, will be active as a Multi-Op entry and signing C6AKP. QSL via home call.

CS7, PORTUGAL
Cornelius "Con", DF4SA, informs OPDX that he will be active in the CQWW CW Contest with the callsign CS7T from near Lisbon, Portugal. DXCC NEWS
Bill Moore, NC1L, DXCC Manager, reports the following information:
* Documentation for ZK1NJC, North Cook Island, has been approved for DXCC credit. It was on the bad list for lack of documentation. The documentation has been reviewed, and it is OK. People can now receive DXCC credit. Anyone who has submitted it and had it rejected can contact the DXCC Desk, and they will be able to update their record without having to submit the card again. If not, it can be sent in the next submission. For corrections contact DXCC at: dxcc@arrl.org

* T5X (Somalia) has been on hold awaiting supporting documentation. This has been received, and upon review, it is now being accepted for DXCC credit. Anyone who had this rejected during a recent submission can contact DXCC for an update to his or her record at: dxcc@arrl.org Or, it can be sent with the next submission for credit.

* The New QRP DXCC Award will start in 2002. The QRP DXCC Award certificate is given for working 100 different DXCC entities on the DXCC List while operating with a transmitter power of 5 watts or less. Applications will be accepted beginning January 2, 2002. Contacts may have been made at any time since November 15, 1945. This award is not endorseable. Certificates will be dated, not numbered. The applicant must certify the authenticity of log information for contacts with 100 entities using 5 watts or less. No QSL cards are required for this award. This award is separate and distinct from the traditional DXCC award program. Credits are not assigned to other DXCC awards. This award is available to all Amateur Radio operators anywhere in the world. The standard DXCC rules apply to this award. The award application and an alpha-numeric list of 100 contacts is required in order to facilitate processing. The fee for this award is 10 USD. This includes all postage and handling fees. EA6, BALEARIC ISLANDS
This year, as the past years, the EA6IB Team will be active from Ibiza Island during the CQWW CW Contest as a Multi-Single entry. The team consists of: EA3AIR, EA3AJW, EA3ALV, EA3AVV, EA3GGO, EA3KU, EA5BM, EA5ZF, EA6ACC, EA6FB, EA6FO and EB6AOK.

FG, GUADELOUPE
Rob, N4CD, is now active as FG/N4CD until November 29th. His activity over the past weekend was on 30/20/15/12/10/6 meters mostly on CW. He may try 80 meters. QSL via N4CD.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Serge is expected to still be active as F6AUS/HI9, for few more days. His activity is mainly on CW on HF bands, including the WARC bands. He was spotted on 17 meters (18073 kHz), 12 meters (24891 kHz) and 10 meters (28019 kHz) this past weekend.

HF0, SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS
Miroslaw Stefanski, SP7JKW, will be active during the whole year of 2002 as HF0POL from King George Island (IOTA AN-010, WW loc. - GC07SU). IOTA NEWS
EU-123. Christine/GM4YMM, John/GM0VIV and Ken/GM0AXY are planning to mount a joint operation from Inchmickery in the Firth of Forth (FF-7 for IOSA and NT28 for WAB). Permission to land and operate has been obtained, and the operation, WX pending of course, is scheduled for Wednesday, November 21st. If there is a problem with the WX, the next attempt will be on Thursday, November 22nd. It is expected that the operation will start at around 1000z, and if at all possible, within the confines of the relatively small island, 2 stations will be used. To start, frequencies 7072 +/- QRM and 14265-14272 kHz dependent on QRM, will be the 2 primary operating frequencies, hopefully simultaneously. Operators will use their own callsigns. QSLing is to the operator either direct or through the bureau. E-mail requests to gm0axy@qsl.net for QSL will be replied to through the bureau. Length of stay on the island is as yet not fixed, but there should be plenty of opportunity for everyone to get in the log(s).

OC-037. Adi, YC3MM, reports that he will sign YC3MM/p (not YC3MM/M) from Madura Island between November 24-26th.

JT, MONGOLIA (Attention Top Banders)
Ken, K4ZW, is finally on the ground in JT-land after a couple of long flights. He states that on Monday morning, they will begin work on the Titanex vertical. Baring any major problems, Ken hopes to fire up on 80 and 160 Monday evening local time. So, look for JT1/K4ZW to be active.

KL7, ALASKA (IOTA Activity)
John, KL7JR, will be active from Kaktovik, Alaska, on Barter Island, December 13-18th, exclusively on 10 meters. His main emphasis is the ARRL 10 Meter Contest and ham radio demonstration at a school. Barter Island (AK-044S, NA-050 and North Slope County/2nd Jud. Dist.) is 120 miles east of Prudhoe Bay in Beaufort Sea. QSL via CBA (QRZ.COM). Listen for him on 28495 kHz +/-.

L34/L64, ARGENTINA (Attention Prefix Hunters)
Members of the Radio Club Rosario in Argentina will use two special prefixes during an expedition to a grid square in the Cordoba Province, November 23-26th. Look for L34H to be active on 80-6 meters (including WARC bands) on CW/SSB/RTTY and L64H to be active on 2m and 70cm using FM. QSL via LU4FM.

NH0, MARIANA ISLANDS
Operators JQ1UKK, JF2SKV, JK2VOC, JG3VEI and JE6MYI will participate in the CQWW DX CW Contest as NH0S as a Multi-Single/High Power entry from the Northern Marianas (OC-086). QSL via JF2SKV either direct (Hisashi Matsushita, 14-1 Ugasemae Iwakura, Toyota, 444-2225 Japan) or through the JARL bureau. Look for them before and after the contest between November 22-27th. They will operate on all bands 160-6 meters and all modes CW/SSB/RTTY/PSK31/FM. Look for the following callsigns:

NP2, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
Dennis, K7BV, will operate from the contest station at St. Croix Windwood WP2Z QTH, November 21-25th, which includes an entry in the CQWW CW Contest in the Single Band 15 meter category. OQ ACTIVITY DAYS
As reported in OPDX.535, Belgian stations are using the special prefix OQ to celebrate the birth of H.R.H. Princess Elisabeth, born on October 25th, until the end of the year. Egbert, ON4CAS/N1TOI, UBA Award Manager, reports that in order to give the many Hams and SWLs a fair chance to work/hear the required number of OQ stations, two "OQ Activity Days" are being organized. They urge all Belgian Hams to make use of their special OQ prefix and propose to make as many QSOs as possible using the following schedule dates, Sunday, December 9th and Saturday, December 22nd during the following times and bands/modes:

From 0700-0800z : 80m CW only
From 0800-1000z : 80 and 40m SSB
From 1200-1900z : all other HF bands, all modes
From 1900-2200z : 6m, 2m and 70cm, all modes (except packet radio and repeater contacts)

This is NOT any kind of contest. The aim is to get everyone interested in the OQ award the opportunity to make the necessary contacts. However, the UBA Award's Manager will be sponsering a plaque or trophy for the UBA member who, using his/her OQ call, makes the highest number of QSOs. Anyone wishing to participate in this challenge is invited to send his/her log to ON4CAS. The plaque or trophy will be handed over during the UBA General Assembly 2002. Furthermore, special certificates will be awarded to the Ham outside of Belgium and both the ONL and foreign SWL who logs the highest number of OQ stations during these activity days. PIRATE ACTIVITY
Maurice, F5NQL, DX Web page editor ( http://www.uft.net ) informs OPDX that Marc, ON6AA, states his callsign is regularly pirated by an operator who signs F/ON6AA, using CW or RTTY modes. It seems that the signals come from south France.

PJ4, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES
Jeff, W8RXR, will be active from Bonaire as PJ4/W8RXR now through November 27th as PJ4/W8RXR. His activity will be mainly on CW on 20/15/10 meters. QSL via his home callsign.

Ted Melinosky, K1BV, informs OPDX that he will now be handling the QSLs for the EY90MT operation by Nodir, EY8MM. He states Nodir is having cards printed up specially for the event, and it may be a while before Ted get them. QSL via Ted's address which is OK on Buckmaster, etc.

QSL IQ3X, who was active during CQWW SSB Contest and the upcoming CQWW CW Contest, via the Bureau or IV3HAX.

Miro, OM3LZ, who was active from Gabon as TR0A during his business trip between October 27th and November 4th, states he made over 3000 QSOs on 20/17/15/12/10 meters SSB and CW. He visited two hams there: TR8CA/Alain and TR8XX/Jean-Claude. Miro sends out a special thanks to both of them for the possibility to operate their radios. QSL will be available during December 2001. Operator Rodger, active from YI1BGD club station last weekend, can be QSLed to Cliff, G0MMI. Cliff can ONLY QSL the contacts made by Rodger when he is visiting there. The other contacts are QSLed usually direct to YI1BGD or per the operator instructions.

S7, SEYCHELLES.
Clemens, DL2GAN, will be active as S79GAN now through December 5th. He plans to be active only 1 or 2 hours a day. No details were provided on bands/modes of activity. QSL via home callsign.

SPECIAL MARCONI ACTIVITY
THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF MARCONI'S HISTORIC TRANS-ATLANTIC RADIO TRANSMISSION
The Marconi Radio Club, W1AA and The Falmouth Amateur Radio Association Amateur Radio operators are making plans to celebrate a Marconi world historical event. December 12, 2001, will mark the 100th anniversary of the first Trans-Atlantic radio transmission by Guglielmo Marconi. That signal was a series of " S S S " transmitted on CW across the Atlantic from Poldhu, Cornwall England to St John's, Newfoundland. The Marconi Radio Club will be using the call sign W1AA/CC (between December 11-16th) and will be operating from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, U.S.A. the location of Marconi's 1903 Trans-Atlantic radio station. During the month of December, Nuccio/I0YKN and Simone/IZ0BTV will be active with the special callsign IU0M in celebration of the first wireless contact across the Atlantic Ocean (one century ago) made by Guglielmo Marconi between Poldhu, Cornwall and St. John's of Newfoundland, on the date December 12th, 1901. SV9, CRETE
Bill, W4WX, will be here November 27th through December 4th signing SV9/W4WX. Look for him on 80-10 meters operating RTTY and SSB. QSL to home call direct or via bureau.

TJ, CAMEROON
Eduardo/EA2TV and Javier/EA2COL are now active as TJ2RSF until November 23th. As reported earlier, they are there working on the installation of some VHF/HF stations in hospitals and missions as a project from the "Radioaficionados Sin Fronteras". They were heard this past week on 20 and 10 meters SSB (around 14195 and 28500 kHz). QSL via EA4AHK.

V4, ST. KITTS AND NEVIS (Update/Reminder)
Larry, KJ4UY, reminds us that he will be leaving Florida on November 21st for Nevis to operate from November 22nd through December 4th. He will be returning to Florida on December 5th. Larry will be operating from the shack of his very good friend, Karl, V44NK. His activity will be on all bands when/where he has propagation on SSB, RTTY, PSK31 and some CW. He will try to operate the CQWW CW contest to give others the multiplier, but his CW is rusty, so please QRS and be patient. U.S. stations please QSL via KJ4UY with a SASE, and foreign stations QSL via KJ4UY with SAE + return postage or via the bureau. He is looking forward to giving out as many contacts as possible for a new country and/or new band/mode country.

XU, CAMBODIA

The Belgian IARU society UBA proudly presents The OQ Award at the occasion of the birth of H.R.H. Princess Elisabeth, born on October 25th, 2001. Belgian stations are entitled to use the special prefix OQ till the end of 2001. Every HAM and SWL is encouraged to apply for this commemorative certificate.

Requirements:

Work/hear stations using the OQ prefix between October 26th and December 31st, 2001.

On HF, Belgians need at least 15 different stations, including at least 4 different prefixes;

On VHF/UHF Belgians need at least 20 different stations, including at least 6 different prefixes;

Other Europeans need at least 7 different stations, including at least 3 different prefixes;

All others need at least 5 different stations, including at least 2 different prefixes.
