2001 OHIO QSO PARTY
The Mad River Radio Club is pleased to announce that the Ohio QSO Party (OQP) will be next weekend from 1600z Saturday, August 25th, through 0400z Sunday, August 26th. Activity will be on 80/40/20/15/10 meters CW/SSB. Categories are: SINGLE OPERATOR, MULTI OPERATOR and MOBILE. Object for Amateurs outside the state of Ohio is to make contact with as many Ohio stations as possible. Non-Ohio stations may work only Ohio stations, while Ohio stations may contact anyone. Certificates will be awarded to the top five single operator entries in the high power, low power, and QRP categories, with separate awards for both Ohio and non-Ohio stations. Certificates will be awarded to the five highest mobile scoring stations within Ohio. Plaques are also available and will be awarded based upon sponsorship. This year's Plaque Sponsers:

EA6, BALEARIC ISLANDS
Christian, DL6KAC, will be going to Mallorca Island (IOTA , DIE E-021) from September 5-27th. Activity will be on 40-10 meters, maybe 80m, SSB and maybe CW. His antennas: Dipoles on the high bands, Inverted L for 40/80 meters using 350 watts. This will be a holiday style operation. QSL to homecall via DARC bureau or direct (qrz.com).

HS, THAILAND (SEANET Activity)
Thai operators will be active during the SEANET Contest, August 18-19th (1200z-1200z) 24hr. HS0AC, HQ of the RAST, will be active on all band CW/SSB. IOTA NEWS
IOTA TOUR. By the time you read this IZ7ATN/Simon, IZ0CKJ/Alessio, IZ0EGB/Massimo, IW0FT/Paolo and IW0FTB/Diego should be QRT from EU-181 (Sveta Anastasya Island) signing LZ/homecall and should be active from AS-123 (Bogsak Island) signing TA0/homecall until August 20th. They will move onto AS-115 (Uc Island) signing TA0/home for one day, August 21st, and then onto AS-098 (Sedir Island) signing TA0/homecall on August 22nd. They will then end their tour from EU-049 (Samos Island) signing SV8/homecall on August 24th. They will be operating on 4-60 meters, mainly SSB. QSL all operations to IZ0CKJ: Alessio Roma, via Sterparo, 43 - 03023 CECCANO (FR) - ITALY.

OC-196. A team of 3 Australian hams are going to Gabo Island from September 26-30th. This is a rare IOTA location and lighthouse location. Full details are at:

SA-052. It has been announced that last week the Peruvian Navy has granted an operation/authorization to activate the San Lorenzo Island. The DXpedition team states that this was the only obstacle left, so the group is very happy and enthusiastic, and are now finishing all the final details for this operation. The possible callsign would be 4T0I, subject to availability. The scheduled dates are as follow: From Friday, September 14th to Sunday, September 16th, they will be active on 80-10 meters on SSB and CW preferably, but they will also work RTTY and PSK31 during some periods on 15 and 20 meters. JD1, MINAMI TORISHIMA
JF8HIQ/JD1 was heard on 18133 kHz at 0945z and JD1BCK was heard on 15 meters between 0730-0930z (check 21230).

LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY
Just a reminder that the "INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE/LIGHTSHIP WEEKEND" is August 18-19th. There are now over 300 lighthouses/lightships in 43 countries that are entered during this weekend. A list of entries can be found at:

The Peconic ARC, W2AMC, ARLHS #333, will activate Horton Point Lighthouse, Southold, NY, on August 18-19th. Operations will be restricted to 1200-2000z each day. This lighthouse is located on the bluffs overlooking Long Island Sound. This will be their fourth activation of this lighthouse for ILLW. The lighthouse is an actively maintained aid to navgation. It is open to the public and features tours and a museum. W2AMC will be active on 40 meters (7.270 MHz), 20 meters (14.270) and possibly 10 meters (28.380) in addition to 6 meters (50.125 MHz) SSB. QSL to W2AMC, PO Box 113, Peconic, NY 11958. They will have an illustrated 8-1/2x11 certificate QSL. Please send a SASE with sufficient postage along with your QSL card.

The Hiawatha Amateur Radio Association will again operate "W8L" for the International Lighthouse weekend. They will activate the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse/Coast Guard Station on Lake Superior. Look for them to be active on all bands and the following modes (SSB/CW/RTTY/PSK31). QSL via K8PT, direct.

During the International Lighthouse Weekend, DL0RUG will operate from Dornbusch Lighthouse (Hiddensee EU-057, ARLHS# FED 026) from August 17-19th. Activities will be on CW/SSB on 40/20/17/15 meters.

Look for the Tybee Island Lighthouse, on Tybee Island, GA, to be on the air for the International Lighthouse Weekend. The IOTA is NA-058. The callsign will be K4T. QSL to AF4MI. Suggested frequencies are around 14265, 21365, 7265 and 50165 kHz.

Giedrius, LY1FW, reports to look for LY1FW/p to be active from Sventoji Lighthouse (ARLHS LIT-006), August 16-19th. His activity will be mostly on 20 meters. QSL via LY1FW CBA address or via bureau.

Dennis/RZ1AK and Vlad/UA1CIO will be active as homecall/p from the Shepelevsky Lighthouse (ERU 007) on August 18-19th. QSL via home calls.

Look for club station ZS1ESC/L to be active from Robben Island during the ILLW weekend, August 18-19th. Activity will be on 20/15/10 meters.

THE PY0T STORY
Vieira, PY1LVF, provided OPDX with the following story and information on his recent Trindade operation. This press release has been edited for publication. He writes: "We (operators Vieira/PY1LVF and Ricardo/PY1VOY) arrived in Rio after a short stop in Vitoria where we decided to get off the ship and take a plane. The ship is still scheduled to arrive in Rio with the entire crew next Saturday. Equipment and antennas remain in the ship. I realize that some information should be spread out to avoid any misunderstanding and/or confusion as follows:

The ship arrived at the island on schedule August 7th at 1900z, but we were not allowed to disembark (not even the militaries) because of the strong winds and heavy rains. We stayed overnight on the ship to start on the next day, August 8th. We finally took a helicopter at 1000z, and the trip did not last more than 5 minutes to step onto the island. Equipment arrived after us, trip by trip.

The first day was tough, windy, cold and raining most of the day. We felt some weather improvements on the next day but not in terms of wind intensity. At least there were no more raining, and the temperature was higher than the previous day. Unfortunatelly, we had to close down the station's operation 5 hours before departure. All the equipment was scheduled to go back to the ship in the morning. A break from the Island was celebrated with cocktails, and we departed during the afternoon. We actually had to use the boat to get back to the ship, which was a very dangerous experience but we got back safely to the ship. The actual dates of the operation were: August 8th, 2001 (first QSO at 1401z) through August 10th, 2001 (Last QSO at 1130z). The PT0T and ZX0Z call were authorized by the ANATEL while we were already on the island despite our use of the callsign homecall/PY0T. We did not want to loose time while waiting for the special callsign authorization. 4000 QSOs were made with 80 countries on 40-10 meters. Unfortunately, our antenna tuner did not work well on 12m and this the only band left blank. For QSLs, PY1LVF (Vieira) will be handling this task. It will take about 2 to 3 weeks to have all cards printed out. He expects to start mailing out cards in mid September. Cards via the bureau will be accepted, but since PY1 Bureau is running very slow on sending and receiving cards, we recommend to use direct if you need the country for your DXCC. Cards via Bureau usually take more than a year to receive. There are a few PY1 hams who have already sent cards direct to the destination bureau to avoid loosing and/or taking that delay.

We may have some more information to provide to whoever is interested to know about the trip, the operation and the island. I understand that many hams were not able to make a QSO since the operation just took 2 days. We hope we can keep this door open with the Brazilian Navy so that, not only us, but other groups can make many 2 days operations and give the opportunity to those hams that need the country for the first time."

Don Field, G3XTT, D68C Publicity Officer, reports that Phil, G3SWH, states the D68C QSLing situation is as follows: "Cards are being processed in the order in which they are received. Direct requests are being dealt with first; after that bureau and E-mail requests will be answered. So far I have confirmed 10,000 QSOs. We are making good progress but please do remember that the D68C team made 168,000 QSOs with over 45,000 unique calls. Please do not send duplicate requests or E-mail chasers to G3SWH. Reports indicate that Jairo, HK5MQZ, states that Malpelo Island QSL card (HK5MQZ/0M) will be printed next week, and they will start replying within the next 30 days (in the order the QSLs were received). Please be patient.

Zik, YT1HA, member of the YU1AAV radio group, informs OPDX that QSLs for YZ1V go to YU1AAV. YZ1V is active in almoust every contest. QSL via the bureau or "Radio Sekcija Kozara", Jurija Gagarina 210, YU-11 070 Novi Beograd, Yugoslavia. Also QSLs for YU70K (1994-95), YU50AAV (1995) and 4N140T (1996) can be sent to the same address. RA3, EUROPEAN RUSSIA
Ron, W6OM, is on a business trip again to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. He will be active on 80/40 meters CW with his usual RA3/W6OM callsign each night. QSL to W6OM.

S2, BANGLADESH

SPECIAL EVENT STATIONS CELEBRATING THEIR INDEPENDENCE

TY, BENIN
A French team of operators are now active until August 29th. Look for TY22DX, TY0CDX and TY68F. Activity seems to be on 40-10 meters (including the WARC bands) CW/SSB at various times through the day.
