3B8, MAURITIUS. Fabian, DF3XY, will be active as 3B8/DF3XY approx. 15 Km
north of from Port Louis, Mauritius (AF-049), between May 21st and June
2nd. Activity will be on 40/30/20 meters using mostly FT8. QSL via DF3XY,
direct, by the Bureau and eQSL. SWL-cards are welcome.
4L, GEORGIA (Also TA). Byron, KF8UN, will be active as 4L/KF8UN from
Georgia between May 9-11th or possibly later. He will also be active as
TA/KF8UN from Turkey between May 22-24th. Activity from both locations
will be mainly 20 meters SSB. QSL via his home callsign direct.
4X0, ISRAEL (Special Event/Update). The "Land of Craters" program con-
tinues with the fourth activation from one of four craters in Israel
located in the Negev Desert. The operation will use the callsign 4X0RMN
between May 13-14th. Operations will be from Makhtesh Ramon ("Ramon
Crater"). Reference numbers are: Holyland Square F-30-BS, WW Grid Square
KM70jo ad WWFF Reference 4XFF-0020. Radio amateurs working 3 of the 4
craters will receive a beautiful certificate on the program's Web site.
Operators mentioned are Amir/4X1AR, Chanan/4Z1DZ, Dan/4Z5SL, Gal/4X1KW,
Gil/4Z1KD, Hilik/4X6YA, Roy/4X5IQ, Shimon/4Z1SH, Udi/4X6ZM, Zvika/4X1ZV
and Zeev/4X5ZS. Activity will be on 80-10 meters using CW, SSB, FT8 and

ADDED NOTES: The first crater (called Arif; on Mount Arif) was activated
last November (2020) using the callsign 4X0ARF. The second crater (called
"The Large Crater") was activated April-May (2021) using the callsign
4X0GDL. The third crater was activated between November 12-13th (2021),
and was from Makhtesh Hakatan ("The Small Crater) using the callsign
4X0KTN.
8D97, INDONESIA (Special WARD Event). Members of the ORARI will commemo-
rate "World Amateur Radio Day" (April 18th) by using the special callsign
8D97WARD between April 16-18th. Activity will be onn 80/40/20/15/10 meters
using CW, FT8, RTTY and the IO-86 satellite (435.880 MHz).
8Q, MALDIVES. Braco, OE1EMS (E77DX), is now active as 8Q7DX from Baa
Atoll (AS-013), Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, until April 27th. Activity will
be holiday style on 80-6 meters (160m probably not) using CW and SSB.
Equipment is an Icom 705 with a Juma 1000 1KW amp into a vertical and
VDAs on the beach. He will use a 4 element yagi on 6m. QSL via E73Y only
or LoTW.
A9, BAHRAIN (Special WARD Event). Members of the Bahrain Amateur Radio
Society (BARS) will be using the special callsign A91WARD until April
18th to celebrate "World Amateur Radio Day" (April 18th). QSL via EC6DX,
ClubLog or LoTW.
C5C/C5B THE GAMBIA DXPEDITION (Update). It has been reported that the
due to a "re-programmed return flight" the C5C DXpedition has been ex-
tended two more days and will now take place between May 22nd and June
8th.
C9, MOZAMBIQUE. Pedro, CT7AHV, is once again active as C91AHV from Chi-
nonanquila, Matola Rio. His length of stay is not known. Activity is on
40/20/15/10 meters using CW, SSB and FT8. Most of his activity this
past week was on 15 meters SSB and FT8. QSL via LoTW, ClubLog or by the

CQ MAGAZINE NEWS (Press Release, dated April 13th)......
Jose Castillo, N4BAA, Named CQ WAZ Award Manager
Succeeds John Bergman, KC5LK
José Castillo, N4BAA, of Straughn, Indiana, has been named the new CQ
Worked All Zones Award Manager, effective immediately, it was announced
today by CQ magazine Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU. Castillo succeeds John
Bergman, KC5LK, who has retired after managing the WAZ program since 2014.
Licensed since 1977 at age 13 - initially as WD4LAH - José has been a
very active DXer for more than 44 years. He is a past president of the
Virginia DX Century Club, has been a member of the North Florida DX
Association, Potomac Valley Radio Club, Yankee Clipper Contest Club and
Frankford Radio Club, and currently belongs to the Society of Midwest
Contesters.
Castillo is on the DXCC Honor Roll (CW, mixed and phone) and holds
5-Band WAZ with all 200 zones. In addition, José holds 37 of the 38
possible WAZ awards (still working on 80-meter RTTY), possibly the only
person with this distinction. He also has attained 5-Band DXCC with
endorsements for 12, 17 and 30 meters, and has over 150 countries on
6 meters. In addition, he has 2959 band/entities in the DXCC Challenge.
Professionally, John is an Operational Excellence Director for Trane
Technologies. He holds a BS and MBA degree in Project Management from
Grantham University and spent 23 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring in
2007 as an Electronics Chief Petty Officer.
"I want to thank John for his years of service to the WAZ program,"
said Moseson, "and I look forward to working with José, particularly
with his first-hand knowledge of the challenges entailed in earning each
of the program's many variations."
"I am sincerely grateful to CQ magazine and Rich for giving me the
opportunity to give back to the DX community," says N4BAA. "The CQ WAZ
Award has always been my driving passion and I look forward to continuing
its notoriety and success." WAZ is the second-oldest continuously operating
award program in amateur radio, dating back to the 1930s. Only the IARU's
Worked All Continents award is older.

be active as CT9/HA2EAV and CT9/HA2KMR, respectively, from Madeira Island
(AF-014) between June 24-28th. They will also be active as CR3DX during
"His Majesty The King of Spain SSB Contest" (June 25-26th).
DAY-XENIA HAMVENTION NEWS.......
* Steve Romagni, W4DTA (YV5DTA), announced on April 13th, that he will
be one of the speakers at the DX Forum this year at HamVention. He
mentions that he will talk about the Venezuelan IOTAs as well as
Aves Island (YV0). The DX Forum is usually on Saturday.
* Tim, K3LR, reported this week: Thanks to Hamvention and Contest Uni-
versity, during Friday, May 20th and Saturday, May 21st, there will
be a bus starting at 7 AM from the main entrance to the Hope Hotel
that will take hams to the front area of Hamvention. The bus will
continue back to the Hope for additional passengers (a loop) and
this service will end by 5 PM each day (Friday and Saturday) with
the last bus run leaving from Hamvention. The bus service will not
have any other hotel stops.
EH4, SPAIN (Special Event). Members of the Radio Club Henares are now
active as EH4WRD until April 24th to celebrate "World Amateur Radio Day"

West, FL, between April 22-25th. Activity will be mainly on 6m

J2, DJIBOUTI (Update). Currently, operators Matt/KN9U and Paul/N7JDI are
active as J20MR and J28JD, respectively, from Djibouti. Both operators
will be active on 40-10 meters. Here is what we know about the operators:
J20MR - The length of his stay is unknown. He states that he is "bouncing
around" in Djibouti, and has a "Shack-in-a-box" with an ICOM
IC-718 (100 watts) into a Wolf River coil (80-10m). Activity
currently has been on 17/15/12/10 meters FT8 with some SSB oper-
ations. He reports on QRZ.com the following suggested operating
times: 0330-0500z, 0830-0930z and 1400-1800z. Suggested fre-
quencies are also listed. QSL via EA5GL. Logs will be uploaded
into LoTW.
J28JD - Is there until November 30th, and stationed at Camp Lemmonier.
Equipment is an IC-7300 into an End-Fed wire (40-10m) antenna.
Activity currently has been on 10 meters SSB and some 40 meters
Contestia 4-250 operations. QSL via EA5GL. Logs will be uploaded
into LoTW.
J2, DJIBOUTI. After two years of forced stop, the members of the Mediter-
raneo DX Club (MDXC) will be soon be on air again with a new challenge.
A very skilled international team of operators will be active as J28MD
near the town of Obok (WW Loc. LK11PX) in Djibouti between October 29th
and November 7th. Operators mentioned are Antonio/IZ8CCW (Team Leader),
Marco/IZ2GNQ, Marco/IZ3GNG, Fabio/IK4QJF, Martino/IU8LMC, Dario/IZ4UEZ,

* Dated April 13th [edited] -- In April 2021, NCDXF announced the
creation of an award - "The DXcellence Award". To be awarded to the
outstanding DXpedition of the last twelve month, which received funding
form NCDXF. The award is intended to recognize excellent in a DX-
pedition, exemplified by practices, ethics, management, transparency,
impact upon the DXing community, and lastly exhibited FUN!
The winner of the award is determined by the NCDXF Board of Directors.
The board considers several factors, including performance, complexity
of the DXpedition, impact on ClubLog most wanted ranking. Especially
important are activities associated with humanitarian and education.
On celebration of our 50th year of operation, NCDXF is proud to
award our first NCDXF DXcellence Award to the S9OK Sao Tome DXpedition.
Their team did a terrific job and after contact with Zorro, JH1AJT,
planned a visit to the local schools. Useful gifts were given to the
children for the classrooms and the children's response was joy and
happiness.
The NCDXF looks forward to other DXpeditions this year that will
qualify for the next award in 2023. We are hopeful that many DX-
peditions will be funded by NCDXF and qualify for this award. Con-
gratulations to S90K on the first award!

versary of the Summits On The Air (SOTA) program in France, look for the
callsign "TM15SOTA" to be activated as of April 15th. A series of three
awards will be put into play. For the "chasers" it will be necessary
to have contacted "15", "30" or "40 and +" different summits with the
callsigns TM15SOTA or TM1SOTA and TM2SOTA over the period extending from
April 15th to December 31st, 2022. Activators will receive an award for
their participation. Planned activity dates are as follows:

UPDATE DATE APRIL 16TH: After several airline delays and spending a
long day at the airport in Papeete, the team arrived on Raivavae on April
15th, at 6PM (local). We were met at the airport by our host and after
about a 15 minute drive arrived at the guest house. We were taken to the
equipment storage area and so far it all looks to be in good condition.
Internet service on the island is not the best, but we did bring along
an Inmarsat satellite terminal (BGAN). Our plan for today is to begin
setting up after breakfast and get on the air as soon as possible.
