5UA, NIGER (Unusual Callsign). Giorgio, IU5HWS (ex-YI9WS), is now in
Niamey, Niger, and is active as 5UA99WS until March 20th. Activity has
been on 20 meters SSB after 1100z. QSL via EA5GL or LoTW.
5V, TOGO (Update). Andy, 5V7JA (KB9IJI), who lives in Mango, Togo (WW Loc.
JK00FI), since 2016 with a mission radio station and hospital, informs
OPDX that he and his family do return to the States from time to time.
He also mentions, "I have a FT-891 and omni-directional MP-1 Super Antenna.
I'm mostly on digi-modes (FT8, JT65, WSPR, JS8CALL, Winlink) between 0000-
0200z and SSB some weekends. No promises, but I'm happy to try and schedule
a QSO." QSL via eQSL or LoTW. Andy states, "I'm happy to still send you an
old-fashioned paper card in the mail from Togo. Just let me know
(kb9iji@gmail.com). Thanks for your patience waiting on the mail system."
8P, BARBADOS. Charles, 8P6ET, will be active as 8P1W during the ARRL
Inter. DX SSB Contest (March 5-6th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/Low-Power
entry. He will also be active later in the month during the CQWW WPX
SSB Contest (March 26-27th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/Low-Power entry.

8P, BARBADOS. Richard "Dick", G3RWL, will once again be active as 8P6DR
from Barbados (NA-021) between March 7-31st. Activity will be holiday
style on 80-10 meters using CW only. He plans to be in the 85th 2022
BERU (British Commonwealth) Contest (March 12-13th). Dick suggests,
"Just tell your readers NOT to respond to BERU contesters on 12/13 March
(it makes us laugh at you)" [because it is a non-US contest]. QSL via

8Q, MALDIVES. Laurent "Lolo", F8CZI, will be active as 8Q7ZI from the
Maldives (AS-013) between March 9-21st. Activity will be holiday style
in CW and SSB using a KX3 into a end-feed antenna. QSL via F8CZI.
9H, MALTA. Mike, G3VYI, will be active as 9H/G3VYI and 9H6YI from south-
west Gozo between March 11-13th, during the RSGB Commonwealth CW Contest.
He informs OPDX on March 1st, that he will be "Traveling with XYL from
UK overland/ferry leaving this week, via Sicily and Malta, as IT9/G3VYI
and 9H/G3VYI en route." Activity in Malta will be field day style from
a high site using his camper-van on all bands using a 100w rig into ver-
ticals and backup dipoles for 40/20/10m. QSL via G3VYI.
9N, NEPAL. Robert, 9N7AA (S53R), posted the following update on QRZ.com,
MARCh 1st [edited]: I continue being on 30m long path to NA on 10131 kHz
FT8/FH daily, from approximately 12:00 to 13:00Z, after which the band
goes flat here, and I usually move to 17m for NA. Only well-equipped NA
and SA stations get over the nasty local QRM that constantly ranges from
S7-9 on 30m. Nevertheless, I see a lot of light and overlapping traces,
mostly in the 1100-1800Hz range. Very difficult to decode at such low
signal levels, so check your TX slot before you transmit and spread out
- you have all the space up to at least 2800Hz. That sure raises your
chances.
On 17m the usable path to NA varies daily, with no forecast tool cor-
rectly predicting whether long or short path is better. VOACAP typically
shows both being equally usable, at least in the 13:00-15:00Z window,
but it is either-or from what I see. Check both and see what is best
on a particular day.
Local QRM is at the "never seen before" level in the whole HF spectrum,
but much worse on bands starting with 20m and lower. 17/15/12&10m are
fairly "clean" compared to low portion of the spectrum and allow decent
copy and runs, at least into EU and JA. I am still in the process of
bringing in a "QRM buster" device, but it may not be available for the
rest of this winter season. Ultra Beam / WIMO 2-element Yagi (40-6m)
works great and with the 180-degree instant switching allows for quick
path checks, or to work someone calling from the opposite direction.
For the time being, activity will only be on 40-6m, while the 80/160
meter antenna remains a project for the summer months. This will also
give me some extra time to try and find a solution for the interference.
Note that 60m band is not permitted in Nepal.
Because of the QRM, the operation on 30m and lower will only be on
FT8 / FH for the time being - not that I like it, not at all, but.. On
other bands, the vast majority of activity is, of course, CW.

C5, THE GAMBIA (Reminder). Don, G3XTT, will once again be active as C56DF
from The Gambia between March 9-18th. He is there for the 85th Commonwealth
Contest (BERU) [March 12-13th]. Look for operation before and maybe after
the contest. Activity will be on various bands, probably all CW like last
time using low power (IC-7300 and wires) from a rooftop apartment. He
will, of course, upload logs to LoTW and ClubLog, but possibly only after
his return to the UK. QSL direct to Don's home callsign or via ClubLog's
OQRS.
CT9, MADEIRA. Operators Klaus/DJ9KM and Georg/DD8ZX, will be active as
CT9/DJ9KM and CT9/DD8ZX from Madeira Island (AF-014) between March 5-12th.
Activity will be holiday style on 40-10 meters using mainly FT8 and RTTY.
QSL via their home callsigns, direct, by the Bureau or LoTW.
D4, CAPE VERDE. Massimo "Max", IZ4DPV, is now active as D4K from Sao
Vicente Island (AF-086). The length of his stay is unknown. Look for
him to be in the ARRL Inter. DX SSB Contest (March 5-6th). Outside of
the contest, Max plans to be on 6 meters. QSL via his home callsign.
DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME (DST). Next weekend it will be time to change your
clocks again. Countries in the Northern Hemisphere (most of N. American
and some of the Caribbean) who observe Daylight Saving Time should change
their clocks on Sunday, March 13th at 2:00 AM, and should move their
"local clocks" forward 1 hour to 3:00:00 AM local time. Daylight Saving
Time will end on Sunday, November 6th at 2:00 AM. European countries will
switch to DST on March 27th. For the history and details about DST, as

ADDED NOTES: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know not to change
their GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set their
computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on "some"
ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..) programs.
DAY-XENIA HAMVENTION NEWS (SWODXA DX DINNER ANNOUNCEMENT; Press Release,
dated March 1st). Bill Salyers, AJ8B (aj8b@arrl.org), from the Southwest
Ohio DX Association, sent out the following [edited]: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The SouthWest Ohio DX Association (SWODXA) has announced that Dr. Scott
Wright, K0MD, will be the keynote speaker at the 37th annual DX Dinner.
The dinner, held in conjunction with the 2022 Dayton Hamvention, will be
on Friday, May 20th, at the Marriott Hotel in Dayton.
Scott will present the "High C's of DXing - Operating in The Caribbean,
Chile, and China".
Scott has been licensed for 45 years and is a life member of the ARRL
and its' Maxim Society. He retains membership in RSGB, CDXC, CWops, A1
Operator Club, MWA and TCDXA. He has also served as the president of the
Rochester DX and Context Club.
Scott was Editor of National Contest Journal (NCJ), 2018-2019-2020. He
has had Contest operations from: China (B1Z), Chile, Uruguay, Turks and
Caicos.
Scott's DX awards include 7-Band DXCC, WAZ + Diamond Jubilee WAZ, CQ WPX
Award of Excellence, CQ 5 Band WAZ, ARRL WAS (8 bands), ARRL Triple Play
award, ARRL WAC, and 323 DXCC entities worked.
His Contesting Awards include # 1 Asia - CQ WPX CW 2007 as part of B1Z
M-M team, #1 Chile - CQ WW CW 2009 - SOAB, #1 World - ARRL DX SSB with
W0GJ and WA0MHJ as VP5H in the multi-single HP category, Several W0 #1
scores in NAQP SSB and #2 US SOSB CQ WPX CW 20 meters.
Professionally, Scott has been a leader in the fight against COVID 19
from the Mayo Clinic where he is a Professor of Medicine and an academic
cardiologist. His research and international teaching invitations have
provided many opportunities for travel and radio operation globally.

DDARS PRESENTATION. The Denby Dale Amateur Radio Society (DDARS) had a
ZOOM presentation with Adrian, KO8SCA, about his DXpeditions. Adrian
devoted his talk to the 2021 trip to Market Reef operating OJ0C on the
tiny piece of rock between Sweden and Finland! He also previewed upcoming
DXpeditions in 2023 to Swains and especially to Bouvet Island the second
most sought after DX entity. 3Y0J is a hugely impressive and difficult
endeavour by a group of amateurs including Adrian himself. To view this

EX0, KYRGYZSTAN. Operators Yuri/R2DY, Pavel/R2DX and Eugeni/RW3FB will
be active as EX0QR from the south shore of Issyk-Kul Lake, Kyrgyzstan,
between March 5-16th. This is their second operation from there. Activity
will be on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. QSL via R2DX,

FH, MAYOTTE (2022 6m EME DXpedition Update). Lance, W7GJ, sent out the
following announcement February 28th [edited]: GOOD news: I have purchased
all the airline tickets and excess baggage fees and have made a deposit on
a rental house in Mayotte (FH) in LH27nb for September 6-18th this year.
After exhaustive research, this appears to be the best - and possibly the
ONLY - suitable site on Mayotte for 6m EME!
I have already obtained written approval to operate as FH/W7GJ, but also
have applied for a non-compound callsign (TO7GJ). There is no published
record of anybody ever working FH from USA on 6m, so I am sure if you are
in NA, you still need it! If you were thinking about trying 6m DX via EME,
*THIS IS YOUR OFFICIAL 6 MONTH WARNING!* You have plenty of time to get
that larger yagi or array up, and get that new 6m amplifier going! Please
spread the news widely throughout the 6m community!
I will have access to WiFi, but I will be using it primarily to update my
computer clock and my list of daily stations worked to the Magic Band EME
email group. I expect to be using the most current version of Q65-60A mode
for all my EME operation and strongly suggest you get some experience with
it before September! I plan on operating on my usual EME sked frequency of
50.190 MHz. If there is any ionospheric propagation, I will be on FT8 on
50.313 or 50.323.
I know many EU stations have already worked FH, but some EU stations and
ALL NA stations still need it for an ATNO. This rural QTH allows me to have
my 6M8GJ up at 67' above the sea. There is an excellent takeoff during ALL
of my moonsets out over the sea (which is only 5 wavelengths in front of
the antenna). I expect to have some good ground gain lobes, including being
able to work stations down below zero degrees elevation.
For NA stations, there are days when NA moonrise is my moonset, so there
could be amazing combination of ground gain on both ends that makes contact
with modest sized 6m stations possible! Of course, there also are days when
my moonset coincides with moonsets in eastern EU and the Middle East, again
presenting excellent opportunities for contacts with more modest 6m sta-
tions. The FH property borders a sports field to the north, and the nearest
neighbor that direction is 200m away, so I am very optimistic about it being
a quiet QTH ;-) Although my moonrise is blocked by mountains, I expect to
be QRV primarily after the moon azimuth reaches 45 degrees, which will still
provide common moon windows with all OC and AS stations.
Most of my EME operation will take place during my local night, so I will
not be plagued with the dreaded daytime equatorial high TEC clouds to inter-
fere with the EME signals. Also, most of the windows with NA and EU are
after workday hours, so hopefully many people can be QRV. Of course, with
the rapid onset of Cycle 25, there may be periods of geomagnetic distur-
bances but hopefully we will have enough common moon windows with everyone
to work through such periods.
The planned station is my new custom built DX Shop DXpedition amplifier,
which is capable of 1500w output in Q65-60A mode, driven by my new ELAD
FDM-DUO SDR. I also will use my ARR preamplifier ahead of my Airspy R2
receiver or the FDM-DUO transceiver. Feedline will again be a short length
of low loss LMR600UF coaxial cable to my 6M8GJ yagi.
I know I gave people plenty of advance warning before my FO 6m EME DX-
pedition to call me when my moon was below 65 degrees elevation, and many
people disregarded those instructions and waited until my moon was too high.
In FO my experience was dismal trying to work stations when my moon was so
much higher than I could aim!!!PLEASE PLEASE call me when my moon is below
65 degrees elevation!!! I probably will NOT be QRV when my moon is above
65 degrees! I hope to have a planned operating schedule posted on my web
site very soon - it will show you when I will be QRV and when my moon will
be too high.

GB20, WALES (Special Event). Look for special callsign GB20SOTA to be
active operating from the Welsh SOTA summit of Mynydd y Cwm (GW/NW-076)
between March 2-26th. Activity is to celebrate 20 Years of the "Summits
on the Air" (SOTA) program. Operations will be on HF, VHF and UHF. QSL

EU-074. To prepare for his expedition to Crozet and especially to test
the FT8 programs, Thierry, F6CUK, will be active as TM8C from
the Island of Brehat (DIFM MA012) between April 23-30th. His
activity will be on 40/30/20 meters using CW, SSB, and FT8,
with 300 watts, a K3 and dipoles. QSL via F6CUK, direct, by

MDXC PRESENTATION. The Madison DX Club's (MDXC) will have a ZOOM pre-
sentation on Tuesday, March 8th. The program will be "Low Band DXing
from Down Under" presented by Adrian, VK2WF, noted DXer with very effec-
tive transmitting antennas. Tune in to the MDXC's Zoom meeting as Adrian
shares his tips, tricks and traps of mastering the low bands year round
with a particular emphasis on his very effective antennas.
The MDXC ZOOM host will be Kevin Shea, N9JKP, that will be online from

time to work through any technical issues. A brief business meeting will

N3, UNITED STATES (Special Event). Members of the Scranton Pocono Amateur
Radio Club (SPARK - K3CSG) will be active as N3T from Steamtown, Scranton,
PA, between May 13-15th, to celebrate "National Train Day" (May 14th) and

V3, BELIZE. Iain, G4SGX, will once again be active as V31GX from Ambergris
Caye (NA-073) sometime soon in March. Activity will be holiday style on
160-6 meters using mainly CW, and possibly some Digital modes (FT8). Iain
will also participate in the Commonwealth Contest (Beru) [March 12-13th].
Also, he will be very active on 160m after the contest. He will run 100
watts into 1/4 verticals over seawater and inverted-L over seawater for
80m. QSL via LoTW or M0OXO.
V4, ST. KITTS. By the time you read this, Pete, G0TLE, should be active
as V4/G0TLE from Frigate Bay, Calypso Bay, Saint Kitts Island (NA-104),
until March 9th. Activity will be holiday style on 40-10 meters using CW
and SSB. He plans to be in the ARRL Inter. DX SSB Contest (March 5-6th)
using a special V4 callsign which is pending. QSL via his home callsign

VP9, BERMUDA. Les, N1SV, is once again active as VP9/N1SV from Hamilton
Parish, Bermuda Islands (NA-005), until March 7th. Activity will be on
various HF bands using mostly CW, JT9 and WSPR. Also, look for him to be
in the ARRL Inter. DX SSB Contest (March 5-6th) signing as VP9I. QSL via

Z6, KOSOVO. Enver, Z61EK, is a new operator in Prishtine. He reports on
QRZ.com, "I have an ICOM 7300, but since I live in an apartment, I am
still struggling to set up a decent antenna."
ZD9, TRISTAN DA CUNHA AND GOUGH ISLANDS. Lance, W7GJ, sent out the fol-
lowing announcement February 28th: It is impossible to go to ZD9 this year
because of Covid travel restrictions. However, I am on the waiting list
for a berth to travel there in the late summer/early fall of 2023 and/or
2024 ;-) Lodging at the west end of the village is anticipated, so the
antenna would only look out over open fields toward the ocean on moonset.
ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS. Colin, G4CWH, will once again be active as ZF2CA from
the ZF1A club station on Grand Cayman Islands (NA-016) for the 85th 2022
BERU (British Commonwealth) Contest (March 12-13th). The length of his
stay is unknown at this time. Activity is usually on 160-10 meters using
CW and SSB. QSL via his home callsign direct.
ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS. Ron, W2PLK, was recently active as ZF2RO from the Grand
Cayman Islands this past February and plans to go back next February 2023.
He states that he operates primarily CW QRP while on vacation and enjoys
POTA activations with his Kx2. Ron mentions that his Cayman Islands license
expires in one year (February), but he expects to renew and make more CW
contacts every year he goes. QSL via his home callsign.
