3Y0J BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update on the Team). Ken Opskar,
LA7GIA, DXpedition's Co-Leader, posted the following on the 3Y0J FaceBook
page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/3093983840726129), February 25th
[edited]:
What's going on right now in the team? In such big projects you have an
overall plan e.g how to conduct the DXpedition, what vessel, dates, equip-
ment and how to do the fund-raising.
At the same time you don't want to miss out on the small details and
this has our highest attention.
  (A) These days we are going into the fine details. By 1st March we will
produce detailed equipment list for all gear, i.e radios, antennas, tents,
cables, filters, tables, chairs, food etc...
The detailed equipment list will include packing details, dimension and
weight so we can finalize the logistics. To make sure we have all needed
gear on the list we will run through multiple QC sessions to pin down any
missing items that will go into a punch list.
All purchasing will soon be finalized.
  (B) The detailed equipment list will be used to prepare 3 loading plans.
Loading of the container in Oslo summer 2022, loading of vessel Marama
and loading equipment into the milpro zodiac. Be rest assured we will not
put the equipment into an arbitrary sequence and hope for the best!
The loading plan and how to build the camp has evolved over the course
of 20 months since we started planning this DXpedition back in April 2020,
and within the next 3 months it will be finalized. It means that each
equipment will be packed and tagged indicating its sequence, content and
what zodiac run it belongs to. This in a predetermined order, we will not
shift equipment around because the tagging serve a purpose that will
achieve our goals. We don't want to e.g land with the antennas, just to
discover the coax or guy anchors or installation tools are in the sail-
  boat!
  (C) We're preparing for a tiered approach where we will go onshore even
during a very short weather window. The short weather window will allow
us to bring onshore a single generator, antennas and 5 radios and tent
for certain period. The first landing will of course also include neces-
sary food, water, heating and safety equipment for this period. After
that the next zodiac runs will continue supplying another generator, more
antennas, more fuel, radios, spare parts etc. As soon as we have the 2nd
generator onshore Cape Fie this will be a full-scale DXpedition. We have
prepared this high level approach of how to sequence the equipment and
soon this will materialize into a very detailed plan of exactly what
equipment is being loaded in what sequence.
It means that we don't need a half day or full day of nice weather to
start operating - we will do that even for very short weather windows
  down to 90-120 min.
  (D) We plan for a vessel inspection in Brasil in mid April. During this
inspection we will prepare for a detailed vessel loading plan that will
tell us exactly where we will store each single equipment in the sail-
boat so to optimize the zodiac loading and landing at Bouvet.
  (E) We plan for a System test in Late April for 5 days where all team
members will meet in Oslo, socialize, assemble the equipment and famil-
iarize and test the radio/amps/antennas on air. After that we will do any
  adjustments if needed.
  (F) by 1st June all these important loading plans that are so important
for the logistic concept will be finalized.
Going to Bouvet is an enormous amount of planning and preparation, it
means prioritizing down other parts of the hobby and prioritizing UP
everything that is Bouvet related. It means spending literally hours
every day on the 3Y0J project. Only this way can we achieve success.
  Let's go to Bouvet!

nately the announcement can only be made at very short notice." QSL via

** Thanks to the individuals who put the island/group and mode
(which is very important) on their QSNs on their PacketCluster

AS-104/ (Reminder/Update to OPDX.1551) The following is an update by
  AS-050.  the RT9K team planning to activate Rykacheva Island (RRA-06-100;
New One) in the Kara Sea as R150WS [edited]: "The start of the
snowmobile expedition "Legends of the Arctic" to Rykachev
Island is scheduled for March 3-4th, 2022 from the village
of Tazovsky of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. A team
of six people will have to walk 1400 km to Rykachev Island.
The route is developed according to the algorithm familiar
to us: the Yamal team and the team from Norilsk meet at the
sopochnaya Karga marine hydrometeorological station. Next,
we go to the coast of the Kara Sea in the area of the Pyasinsky
Bay and the we walk along the coast to the marine hydrometeoro-
logical shore station Sterlegov. On Sterlegov we have formed a
fuel reserve for the transition to Rykachev Island and back."

NCDXF NEWS (Press Release: Steve Lund, K6UM SK)[dated February 18th].
An active and strong supporter of the NCDXF/IARU DX Beacon program,
Steve Lund, K6UM, of Newberg, Oregon, became a SK on February 4, 2022,
after an extended battle with cancer. He served many years as an Appointed
Position for the Northern California DX Foundation on the IARU Beacon
Technical Support staff.
Among his activities for the Beacon program, include:
    * Carefully obtained and curated a wonderful collection of spare
radios and other parts for the V1 system, while V2 was in develop-
ment. This work extended by many years, the life of the V1 beacon
      installations.
    * Provided technical assistance to the beacon operators to diagnose
and keep beacons on the air. He often repaired and refurbished
radios and controllers, from 2004, till V2 began deployment in 2016.
    * Steve had a strong sense of ownership for the beacon program, and
worked closely with K6AW, Steve Merchant to keep the program alive.
    * Engaged in antenna field testing to provide performance information
back to the Beacon operators, to improve the local Beacon performance.

An ex-HP engineer, Steve contributed significantly to keeping the V1
setup functioning, and the design base for the V2 product.

His interests, observations, and contributions will be missed. RIP OM.
Please let me know if anyone has any questions.

PZ, SURINAME (Update/Change/IOTA Op). Joerg, DJ1JB, who was expected
to be active again with Markus, DJ4EL, as PZ5G from Papegaaien Island
(SA-092, WW Loc. GJ15kv) between February 23-26th (possibly 27th), had
to cancel his trip/activity "due to a family accident". However, Markus
DJ4EL (PZ5GE), has continued to activate Papegaaien Island. He mentioned
on Tuesday [edited], "Finally we found a good boat for the DXpedition to
the rare SA-092. I will bring 3 persons with me to Papegaaien Island who
will support the solo operator. Please consider a donation for my expensive
DXpedition to a very rare IOTA in South America. Thank you for your support
and see you from the island tomorrow!" Remember, Markus will be active
from the Suriname mainland (WW loc. GJ25kr) both before (February 19-22nd)
and after (February 27th-March 1st) the IOTA operation as PZ5GE. Activity
will be on 40-10 meters using SSB only. QSL direct via ClubLog or by the
Bureau.
