FOC PRESS RELEASE (FOCUS75 Magazine)
\
Roger, G3SXW, FOC Committee Secretary,
sent out the following on July 29th:
"During the month of May 2013 the First Class CW Operators' Club hosted a CW QSO Party, FOC75, to help celebrate the Club's 75th Anniversary. This turned into a major CW fun event for the whole month. Over 60 stations around the world signed with the *FOC prefix, making over 200,000 CW QSOs and leading to over 1,600 applications for our commemorative certificate - well beyond our wildest dreams. This was a major tribute to Samuel Morse, Alfred Vail and to the Club's motto: 'A man should keep his friendship in constant repair' (Samuel Johnson, 1709-1789).FT5ZM AMSTERDAM ISLAND DXPEDITION UPDATE (From The FT5ZM Web Page). [edited]FOC publishes a quarterly magazine for its members called 'FOCUS', a high-quality magazine edited by Gabor, S57WJ. But this FOC75 event met with such huge success that we have decided to publish an extra edition, called 'FOCUS75'. FOC is pleased to share this special edition of our magazine with not only members but also anyone who enjoys CW. Just go to http://www.g4foc.org/ to down-load it. Read the whole story of this month-long celebration of Morse Code, especially the operating experiences around the world, and see photos of those who made it happen in a pull-out poster.
CW is alive and well and will remain so for at least the next 75 years - FOC will see to that!"
"The Amsterdam Island DXpedition team wants to hear well and be well heard on the low bands. This means we need a lot of wire.HC, ECUADORWB9Z, with the help of NV9L, K9NU, N9TK, K9TP, N9LAH, W9ILY, KE9I, K9CJ, and 'Lee', has prepared over 10,000 feet of radials for our 30, 40, 80, and 160 meter verticals. We will also have several low band receive antennas — both wire antennas and a receive 4-Square. In the photo

In 2004 we published a book: 'Contesting in Africa: Multi-Multi on the Equator' describing the first ten years. It is now time to update the story. The timing of this is important because we have now come to the End of an Era, so to speak: we will no longer return to West Africa to take our large stock-pile of equipment out of storage for the 20th time. It has been donated to the Liberian Amateur Radio Association.
The modern form of 'book' is a web-site - so we have developed one. The group offers a huge vote of thanks to John Warburton, G4IRN, for investing so much skill, time and energy into this project. The site comprises offerings from many of the Contest group and tells, hopefully in detail but also in an entertaining way, the story of these past 19 years. All the facts and figures are there but more importantly also the experiences: those long bus-journeys between countries and the fascinating sights along the way, visiting African villages, and every amateur radio aspect from managing pile-ups, to maintaining deteriorating amplifiers, to negotiating transmitting licences and much, much more, embellished with many video clips. The group has certainly learned a lot about life in West Africa and thoroughly enjoyed every minute, every challenge.

SILENT KEY
It has been reported by several sources that [edited],
"Tom Christian, VP6TC/VR6TC, longtime famous ham from Pitcairn Island,
who probably gave most of us that 'new one,' has passed away, peacefully,
on July 7th. Tom was diagnosed with possible Parkinson's and early signs
of Alzheimer's/dementia in December, 2009, while on a family visit in
New Zealand. His wife, Betty Christian, VP6YL/VR6YL, says his health
'deteriorated all too quickly,' and the last few months were "cruel ones
to watch such a strong, vibrant man reduced to where he was not really
aware of his surroundings and then was unable to walk and swallow food
or liquid.' Tom was buried July 8th in the cemetery on Pitcairn. Lack of
available transportation prevented most of Tom and Betty's children making
it back for the funeral. Tom was known as the 'Voice of Pitcairn,' was
an M.B.E., Member of the British Empire, and served on the Pitcairn Island
Council as the Governor's Representative for 40 years."

W4DXCC DX AND CONTEST CONVENTION
Now in its 9th year, the W4DXCC and
Contest Convention is the Southeast's largest and most highly attended
ham radio event. This year W4DXCC IX takes place at the MainStay Suites
in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, on September 27-28th. A full schedule of
presenters will speak on DX and Contest subjects throughout the convention.
The Ten Tec Hamfest is the same day and scheduled, so both Ten Tec and
W4DXCC can be taken in the same day. It is a good time to bring the family
as they can do other activities in the area. It's a great time for all.

XR0, JUAN FERNANDEZ (Press Release/Update #2) [edited]
"Finally, the team was completed! We are pleased to to share our experience with Hans, DL6JGN.XV, VIETNAMThe flights and locations have already been fixed and confirmed. Now the team will focus on technical aspect of the DXpedition, such as antennas, radios and RX systems.
Unfortunately, the island is surrounded by high mountains, and certainly does not allow us to be open to 360 degrees. Despite this, we will place our setup of antennas in order to satisfy the largest number of amateur radio operators as possible.
Surely, a major focus will be given to the RTTY, which we think is highly requested by the hamradio community.
We would like to remind you again, how important for us, is your financial support. At the time we were able to cover only part of the huge costs that this expedition required.
To give you an idea of costs, the total budget of the whole operation JUANFERNANDEZ2013 is approximately 56,000 USDs (42,000 €). That said, we would be eternally grateful if you decide to support and help us accomplish this our adventure.
On our website,
http://www.juanfernandez2013.com you can do it (donate) very simply...... 73 XR0ZR Team"
