2009 W0DXCC CONFERENCE
Make plans to attend the 2009 WØDXCC and Contest
Central Conference, July 18th, in Rochester, Minnesota. It is a "FULL
Day" dedicated to HF Contesting and DXing! There will be DX and Contest
forums, vendors, QSL card checking and a DX Dinner Banquet. Guest speakers
mentioned are: John/ON4UN (on Low Band DXing), Rich/N6BV (on HF antennas),
Carl/K9LA (on Sunspots and propagation), Rob/NC0B (on HF receivers),
Ward/N0AX on Contesting and DX Banquet speakers will feature Desecheo
DXpedition operators (including Glenn/W0GJ and Ralph/K0IR as speakers).

5H, TANZANIA
Operators Hermann/DL2NUD and Joachim/DL9MS are planning
to be active as 5H1HP and 5H1MS, respectively, from Zanzibar, between
May 16th and June 2nd. Activity will be on the HF bands and 6 meters,
but an emphasis will be on VHF (EME/MS). Grid squares to be activated
are: KI93RU and KI94RA.
8Q, MALDIVES
Hiroshi, 7M2VPR, is now active as 8Q7HN. Length of his
operation is unknown at this time. He was spotted Sunday on 15 meters
SSB -- between 0530-0800z on 21235 kHz and 1300-1330z on 21244 kHz.

8R, GUYANA
The 6 Meter Beacon Project, Inc., is happy to announce a
HF-50 MHz DXpedition here between June 16th and July 6th. Antenna for
6 meters will be a 6M7JHV yagi at 45 ft. on the Atlantic Ocean pointed
towards EU and NA, and using a 3CPX800A7 amp. Activity will be split
between two teams: 11 days will be by Chris/W3CMP and Dave/N3DB, the
other 11 days by Terry/K4RX and Ken/AC4TO. They hope to get some decent
openings to, amongst other places, Northern EU, 5B/4X and W6/W7. They
expect to have internet access most of the time. Operating frequencies
and Web site will be announced at a later date.
AN8, CANARY ISLANDS
Operators Luis/EA8AY, Jeronimo/EA8NC, Pedro/EA8QP
and Juan/EA8TT will use the special callsign AN8R during the CQWW WPX CW
Contest (May 30-31st) as a Multi-Multi entry. QSL via EA8AY.

AX, ANTARCTICA (Special Callsign)
Bob, VK0BP, currently employed by the
Australian Antarctic Division as a Communications Tech from Davis Base
Station (WABA VK-03, WAP AUS-03, IOTA AN-016), Antarctica, will be using
the special callsign AX0BP on April 25th, to celebrate ANZAC Day. ANZAC
Day is a national public holiday to commemorated and honor the members
of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at
Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. This holiday is observed by
Australia and New Zealand, as well as the Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and
Tonga. Bob can only use this callsign from midnight to midnight (local
time -- Davis is +7 hrs UTC). However, Bob will not be able to operate
the full 24 hours but will do his very best to operate as long as possible
that day. Australian operators can only use the AX prefix just 3 times
per year -- Australia Day (January 26th), ANZAC Day (April 25th) and
World Telecommunications Day (May 17th). QSL via VK2CA, direct only
(2 USDs and a SAE is preferred).
C6, BAHAMAS
Look for C6APR to be active again from the Crooked Island
Lodge, Pittstown Point, Crooked Island (NA-113), Bahamas. Activity will
take place between July 23-27th, and during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July
25-26th) as a Multi-Op/Mixed-Mode/High-Power/DXpediton entry. Operators
mentioned are: Pete/W2GJ, Ed/K3IXD, Dallas/W3PP and Jim/K4QO. Operations
before and after the contest by C6APR will be on 80-10 meters including
the 30/17/12 meter bands using CW and SSB. Also, look for C6AXD to be on
RTTY and C6AQO on 6 meters (grid FL22). All three callsigns are good for
Bird Rock Lighthouse (ARLHS BAH-005) as well as IOTA NA-113 and Grid
Locater FL22tt. All QSLs go to K3IXD.
CQWW DX CONTEST BREAKS 10,000 LOG BARRIER!
A press release (dated April
15th) from CQ Communications, Inc., states: "For the first time, more
than 10,000 logs have been submitted for the CQ World Wide DX Contest,
according to Contest Director Bob Cox, K3EST. In addition, Cox reports
that the number of CW logs have exceeded the number of phone logs for
the first time in more than 20 years.
According to Cox, there were a total of 5013 SSB logs and 5272 CW logs submitted for the 2008 running of the event, for a total of 10,285 logs. This is the first time that the CQWW -- already the world's most popular amateur radio contest -- has broken the 10,000 log mark. Of these, nearly 98% were submitted electronically.
It is also the first time since 1986 that more CW logs have been submitted than SSB logs. 'This is a clear indication,' says Cox, 'not only of the health of contesting and of CW, but of ham radio as a whole.' In addition, the logs contained the callsigns of more than 50,000 different amateur stations making at least one contest contact, indicating that many more stations participate in the CQWW Contest than submit logs.
SSB results of the 2008 CQWW Contest will be published in the August 2009 issue of 'CQ' magazine; CW results will appear in the September issue."
DAYTON TOP-BAND DINNER BANQUET FULLY BOOKED
George/K8GG and George/W8UVZ
announced: "Despite the economic turn-down, the response for the 2009
Dayton Topband Dinner has been steady and growing. We are now fully booked
with a long waiting list for this May. We are sorry to report we cannot
handle any further reservations and have been turning away repeat attendees
for over a week now. We will do it again in 2010, assuming the Dayton
Hamvention(r) continues, so if you missed this year and want to attend
next year, please mark you calendars to contact us in late February or
early March next year. We will announce the details on The Topband
Reflector, and various DX e-bulletins as we have on the past. Thanks for
your understanding, and we hope to see you next year."
GD0, ISLE OF MAN (EU-116)
Stewart, GM4AFF, will be active as GD0F during
the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/SSB/24-Hrs/
Island entry. QSL via M0CMK.
HB0, LIECHTENSTEIN (Update)
Operators Kasimir/DL2SBY and his friend
Georg/DF1SR will be active from here between April 24th and May 4th.
Activity will be on HF bands (80-10m) using CW, SSB and RTTY. Kasimir
informed OPDX that he has bought Spiderbeam for 10/12/15/17/20m which
will improve his signal. Other equipment includes a TS2000, FT900AT,
Ameritron AL811, HF9V vertical and a monoband vertical for 30/40m.
Activity will also take place on 13cm and 23cm using EME. Equipment
will be a FT726R, Dish 3, 7m, and 2 amplifier for both bands. Kasmir
and Georg will use two separate callsigns for this operation. For the
HF bands, they will use HB0/DL2SBY and for the EME activity they will
sign HB0/DF1SR. QSL via DL2SBY, by the Bureau or direct.
HI, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Ronny, OT4R, will be active as HI7/OT4R from
Punta Cana between May 9-30th. Activity will be on 20/15/10 meters SSB.
Suggested frequency for 20 meters maybe 14300 kHz. QSL via OT4R.
IOTA NEWS
AF-019. Operators Vincenzo/IW9EJP, Filippo/IW9FRB, Giovanna/IW9GVP (YL),
Ferdinando/IW9HSK, Ezio/IT9OJW, Sebastiano/IT9ZIR and Dario/
IT9ZZO will be active as IG9/homecalls from Linosa Island
(IIA AG-003, MIA MI-128) between April 24-26th. They plan
to operate on SSB, PSK and RTTY on the HF bands, 80-10 meters.

AS-077. (Special Event) Look for 8J6SL to be active from the Kumamoto Museum between May 1st and October 31st, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Hisatsu (Railroad) Line (Steam Locomotive) on the Island of Honshu (JIIA AS-077-001). Activity will be on all bands and modes. Possibly 5 stations will be on the air. QSL via the JARL Bureau.
AS-133. This was a late one to report, but hopefully you can get him on the last date. Wim, XU7TZG, will be active as XU7KOH from Koh Russei (aka Bamboo Island) again, between 0500z, Friday, April 17th, and 0500z, Monday, April 20th. Activity will be SSB only (and possibly PSK31). Suggested IOTA frequencies are: 3755, 7055, 14260, 18128, 21260, 24950, 28460 and 28560 kHz. EU-017. (Update) Members of the Noantri DX & Contest Team will be active as ID9N from Vulcano Island (Eolian Group) (IIA ME-018, MIA MI-122, WLOTA 1001), April 25-30th. Look for activity on the HF bands, CW, SSB and the Digital modes. They will have two high power stations from this dangerous outpost. During operations they will have a 6m beacon active from grid square JM78lj (ID9N/B 50.006 MHz). Operators mentioned are: Andy/ IZ0EHO, Vincenzo/IZ0FKE, Alberto/IZ0FMA, Claudio/IZ0GKX, GiorDano/IK0XFD and Alberto/IK0ZCW. QSL via IZ0GKN. EU-123. Operators Colin/G3VCQ, Sharon/M3VCQ, Andy/M0GAV, Joanne/2E0JOX and Tim/2E0TJX will be active as MM3M from Ilse of Arran, Scotland, during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th). QSL via G3VCQ. They will possibly be active as GS3RCM/p before and after contest. QSL OK via RSGB Bureau or direct.
EU-123. Operators Tom/MM0BHX, Gordon/MM0GPZ, Phil/GM0LIR, Iain/GM0OQV and John/GM0NBM will be active as GM0B from the Isle of Bute, Scotland, during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th). QSL via MM0BHX.
EU-189. (Update) A Belgian team of five operators will attempt a landing on Rockall Island between April 30th and May 1st. They will be on the air with two stations using the callsign MM0RAI/p for about 48 hours. A report from the "Maciverblog" indicates that they are "hoping to achieve a world first by shooting a video on the rock, more than 240 miles west of mainland Scotland, and streaming it live on the internet on each of the three days they plan to spend there.
A Scottish cameraman is also going to be in the landing party and, if conditions are good and the technology works, hopes are high of the first live TV news broadcast from the rock. Rockall, the summit of an ancient volcano, stands about 60 feet above the Atlantic. Landing on the rock is very difficult as it is steep even on its easiest side. The area is infamous for its high seas and very changeable weather throughout the year."

SA-021. Members of the Radio Club Grupo DX Bahia Blanca will be active as L21D from Ariadna Island, located 70km south of Ingeniero White Harbour, in the natural reserve of Bahia Blanca, May 1-3rd. Activity will be on 80-10 meters using CW, SSB and PSK. QSL as per operator's instructions.
K4, UNITED STATES (Special Event)
Operators from ARES in the Summerville,
SC, area (Dorchester County, Grid locater EM93), will activate the special
callsign K4E during an ARES Earthquake Emergency Communication Awareness
Exercise, April 21-22nd. When not passing event traffic, K4E will be
available for QSOs on 80-15 meters, as well as 2 meter FM local QSOs. QSL
via W4NSC. This training exercise is to demonstrate the cooperation needed
between the firemen, policemen, hospital workers, hams, and other public
service personnel throughout South Carolina in time of an emergency.
South Carolina is prone to hurricanes, and it has been determined that
a major earthquake occurring in the greater Charleston, SC, area would
divide the area into 18 "islands" due to damage to infrastructure such
as bridges and roads. Each of these "islands" is equipped with a structure
containing various emergency supplies and Amateur radio equipment and
antennas. Each POD (Points of Distribution) has a generator and is
environmentally controlled. This exercise is a test of one of those
"islands".

S0, WESTERN SAHARA (Update)
The Tifariti Gang, signing S04R, is now QRT
as of 0500z, April 18th. Operation netted 37,005 QSOs (CW - 20,274,
SSB - 14,342 and RTTY - 2,389). The S04R log is now available online

S2, BANGLADESH
By the time you read this Ramon, DU1UGZ, is expected
to be active as S21UGZ from Dhaka City until June 20th, depending on
his work schedule. He will be using a low band dipole at first, so his
emphasis will be on 80/40 meters SSB and RTTY. From May through June,
he will be using a beam for 10, 12, 15, 17 and 20 meters. He hopes to
have a linear in use starting in May as well. QSL via DU1UGZ.
SILENT KEY
Philippe, LX2A/LX7I, informs OPDX that Charly Hausemer,
LX1AJ, from Differdange, Luxembourg (LX), became a "Silent Key" (SK)
on April 7th, at the age of 89. He was the oldest ham in LX-land and
was a licensed amateur for more than 60 years. He was a keen DXer and
had contacted nearly all the DXCC entities on SSB. He was part of a
group of hams who established amateur radio in Luxembourg, and also the
"Reseau Luxembourgeois des Amateurs d'Ondes Courtes (RL) (in English,
Luxembourg Amateur Radio Society). He was one of the first hams who got
licensed.
Philippe, LX2A, states, "He was my uncle and introduced me into amateur radio and always supported me in this great hobby. Putting up the contest station LX7I would never have been possible without his help. He was a great OM and I hope to be able to promote amateur radio in Luxembourg and worldwide like he has always done it." OPDX and its readers would like to send out our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of LX1AJ.
SX5, DODECANESE (GIOTA Op)
Members of the Dodecanese Radio Amateur
Association (DRAA) will be active as SX5SYMI from Symi Island between
July 31st and August 3rd. Activity is good for the GIOTA (Greek Island
On The Air) as DKS 032 and also the IOTA as EU-001. QSL direct to SV5FRI.
TI6, COSTA RICA
Operators Orrin/K9KEJ and Don/W9YOR will be active as
TI6/homecall between April 28th and May 1st. Activity will be SSB only
on 40/20/17 meters. QSL via TI6/K9KEJ via EB7DX and TI6/W9YOR to his
home callsign.
V63, MICRONESIA
Operators Shoji/JA7HMZ (V63DX) and Masayuki/JH7IOS
(V63CW) will be active from Pohnpei Island (OC-010) between May 11-16th.
Activity will be on 40-6 meters using CW and SSB. QSL via their home
callsigns.
VK9M, MELLISH REEF
The VK9GMW DXpedition went QRT at 0400z on April
13th, making 20,058 QSOs, of which 2028 were on 160 meters. The team
has arrived safely at the Australian mainland (Airlie Beach) on April

YW0, AVES ISLAND
The 4M5DX Group, which was expecting to activate YW0A
from Aves Island in March, is still waiting for a scheduled day by the
Venezuelan Navy for transportation.
