3B7C, ST.BRANDON ISLAND (DXpedition Update)
Don Field, G3XTT, has sent out a press release (#4) with updated information. Excerpts from the release states that plans for the September FSDXA DXpedition to St. Brandon are progressing well. A suitable boat has been chartered to take the team and its 6 tons of equipment to the island. The licence has been received, and all permits are in place for their stay on the island. The team will be operating from Isle du Sud, the southern end of what is shown on the charts as Cocos Island (not to be confused with Cocos Island in TI9 or the Cocos-Keeling Islands VK9!).

"Lighthouse on the Air" enthusiasts might be interested to note that Cocos Island does have a beacon (WLOTA-Ref. LH 1017). This will be an all-time new one for lighthouse collectors - assuming the light is accessible from Isle du Sud. There have been some team changes. Some of the previously announced members have, unfortunately, had to drop out of the expedition. These include G3VMW, G4KIU, SM5AQD, WF5T and W3WL. However, they are delighted to announce that they will be replaced by Bob/MD0CCE (also known as N2BB), Pete/SM5GMZ (recently QRV from 6W), Gordon/G3USR and Clive/GM3POI (well-known as a low band expert living in the Orkney Islands).

It was also announced at the RSGB Board meeting on Saturday, March 16th, that the board unanimously agreed to award the Five Star DXers Association (FSDXA) the "Calcutta Key" for the association's outstanding service to International Friendship. The FSDXA now has a four page full-color brochure with more information about their expedition available. This can be downloaded in both high and low definition PDF format from their Web site at:

BS7, SCARBOROUGH REEF
A team of 18 operators left for Scarborough Reef at 0600z, April 25th, from Hong Kong and arrived at the Reef on the North side just as the sun was setting on April 28th. The trip was slower than expected because of extreme rough seas. As this bulletin was being written, the team reportedly (as of 0300z, April 29th - Local time at Scarborough Reef was 1100 hours in the morning) "has made entry into the lagoon area and are starting to build the operating positions. They are proceeding as quickly as possible under the conditions that are present. The weather is now perfect and for the time being should not hinder work activities as the day moves on."

Currently, all the DXers world-wide wait patiently to work the most wanted DXCC entity. By the time you read this, they should be on the air and active for 9 days. This operation has been in the planning stages for 5 years. We were told that the International Team is led by Bob/W6RGG and includes James/9V1YC, Chen/BA1HAM, Fan/BA1RB, David/BA4RF, Chen/BA4RC, Terry/BA7NQ, Ko/BV6HJ, Eddie/DU1EV, Jun/DU1BA, Tom/ND2T, Joe/AA4NN, Paul/K4UJ, Mike/N6MZ, Mike/K9AJ, Martti/OH2BH, Massimo/I8NHJ and Christian/DL3MBG. The support staff include Tom/N4XP, Don/N1DG, Sam/K5YY, Paul/BV4FH and Jose/DU1JMG. pAccording to their press release: "Scarborough Reef has unique and dangerous attributes and as such we will not have online logs or pilots. All efforts are on keeping our team safe so they can provide a new one to as many hams as possible." OPDX wishes the team best of luck and a safe operation and safe trip back from BS7. QSL via KU9C. NEWS FLASH (Just before going to print!):PRESS RELEASE #9 (14:00 UTC 29 April):
"The BS7H team worked throughout the day in setting up the stations and managed to get one station operational as darkness fell. The first QSO was made at 13:47 UTC. The dangerous environment prohibits any work in darkness, and they were unable to fully provision the one station that is operating. As a result, the CW station now on 14024 does not have enough gas to last the evening, so when you hear them QRT do not panic. At daybreak they will resupply the station as well as complete adding the other stations. We expect the team to be fully operational with all stations by darkness tomorrow.

QSL INFO AND NEWS
US Postal Service has announced all of the increased postal rates.

See: www.usps.com/cpim/ftp/bulletin/2007/pb22203a.pdf
In addition to an increase in U.S. Domestic First Class rates, international rates also increase and Surface Parcel Post service is being discontinued. It is believed that the loss of surface parcel post will probably effect the cost of forwarding cards via the ARRL Outgoing QSL Bureau (unless they are using m-bag service and even then those rates are increasing significantly).

Look for R7C/TF QSLs to start coming out in the middle of May. This info is via RW3GW/3.

QSL Manager Alan, VK4AAR, reports: "Due to the rapidly increasing strength of the Australian dollar (or perhaps the US dollar is weakening?) it is vital that DXers are aware that ONE U.S. DOLLAR will no longer buy a stamp to any part of the world from Australia. Lately I have been able to survive by using 'card only rate' postage ... but that is no longer possible. I have noticed that the EURO is more stable and €1.00 (one Euro) will be enough ... but do NOT send coins! Banks only accept and exchange paper money."

QSL Z29KM via EA7FTR.
