SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE EDITOR AND NODXA CLUB PRESIDENT -- Tedd, KB8NW
It is with great sorrow to report that the members of the Northern Ohio
DX Association have lost a dear friend and member. Jim Hire, W8ZET, became
a "Silent Key" early Thurday morning due to some complications after an
operation on Monday. Jim, a club member since the late 1970's, really
enjoyed promoting NODXA and DXing. Through DXing, Jim has made many friends
that cover a wide range -- from all over Ohio and many foreign DXers in
Europe. Jim worked 370 DXCC entities. Many DXers/Contesters have probably
met Jim at the Dayton HamVention. For over the last six years, Jim has
invited, hosted and provided a hospitality suite for NODXA at the Dayton
HamVention. During this yearly gathering of DXers, Jim enjoyed meeting all
his friends from all over the world. Through his wonderful hospitality,
world-wide friendship and club promotions, NODXA gave Jim (and his wife)
a honorary "NODXA Lifetime Membership". For me, Jim's sparkling smile and
presence at club meetings and seeing his joy at the hospitality suite will
be dearly missed. On behalf of NODXA, I would like to send out the club's
deepest sympathy to his wife, family and many friends. Please visit the

5K0, SAN ANDRES (Update)
Operators DH7WW, DK8YY, DL2AKT, DL2OAP, DL3ALI,

16-29th. The team was issued the special callsign 5K0Z. Activity will be
on 160-6 meters and the satellites on all modes. They will also be active

9H, MALTA
Maurice, ON4BAM, will be active as 9H3Z from July 15-30th,
which includes the IOTA Contest. Activity will be on all HF bands SSB
and PSK. QSL via ON4BAM.
9H, MALTA
Jack/RW3QC and Igor/RN3OA will be active as 9H3QC and 9H3OA,
respectively, from July 18-31st. Activity will be on 80-10 meters. Jack
will participate in the IOTA Contest as 9H3QC. QSL via homecalls.
CU, AZORES (IOTA Op)
Operators CT1AHU, CT1AVC, CT1EFL and CT1EGW will be
in the Azores, July 20-30th. They plan to be active on SSB, CW and RTTY
from the CU2 (EU-003) and CU3, CU5, CU6 and CU7 (EU-175) call areas as
time permits. They plan to participate in the IOTA Contest from the QTH
of CU3AD and CU3EJ on EU-175.
FP, ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELON (Update)
Paul, FP/K9OT, and Peg, FP/KB9LIE,
have updated the Web page for their August 11-19th trip to Miquelon
(NA-032). This includes an entry in the sideband North American QSO Party
as FP/K9WM, club callsign of the Green River Valley ARS. Both Paul and
Peg are trying for FP/DXCC and FP/WAS. The URL address is:
FR5, REUNION ISLAND
Patrick, FR5FD, is expected to be active during the
next IOTA Contest. Special note is Patrick does not have a QSL Manager
anymore.
GRID SQUARE TO BE ACTIVATED
The North Side Contesters Club is announcing
an expedition to activate grid square EN-67 during the period September
21-23rd. This will be a field day type operation from Brockway Mountain
in Keweenaw County, Michigan, with coverage on all HF bands, plus 6 meters,
20 meters and 70 cm. The antennas on HF will be dipoles and inverted V's,
and a 5 element beam will be used on 2 and 6 meters, 11 elements on 70cm.
The expedition will be using the callsign K8B. The QSL Manager will be
NV8V. Look for the VHF/UHF operation on the SSB calling frequencies, or
10 kHz up if in use. The HF station will operate about 5 kHz above the
IOTA frequencies, plus or minus QRM. The operators will be: NV8V, N9RK,
W8UFO, AB8KO, KA8FFM and N9SSN.
HK0, PROVIDENCIA ISLAND
Roberto, EA4DX, reports that everything is a
go for a DXpedition to IOTA NA-049. He reports that the callsign issued
was HK0/EA4DX, and expects to collect the license/papers next week. All
plane tickets and hotel reservations are confirmed and paid. He will be
leaving for Bogota, Colombia, on August 14th and expects to be on the air
transmitting from HK0 sometime on the 20th. Roberto will be leaving the
island early August 31st, so he will be shutting the station down on the
30th. DXpeditioon pilots will be JI6KVR for JA and EA5BY and EA5FID for
the rest of the world.
IOTA CONTEST 2002 (1200z July 27th to 1200z July 28th)
Don Field, G3XTT,
IOTA Contest Manager, reports: "Just a little over a couple of weeks now
until this year's IOTA Contest. And, judging by the announcemenents in
the bulletins and on the reflectors, there will be a huge ammount of island
activity; plenty of multipliers for the serious contesters, plenty of IOTA
counters for the IOTA enthusiasts. It looks like the best IOTA Contest
yet! Most of you will have seen the write-up and results from last year
(if not, they are, of course, on the RSGB HF Committee Web page -
http://www.rsgbhfcc.org ). The main rule changes this year are in the rules
regarding island DXpeditions, the introduction of a World multi-op category
(previously, only island stations could participate multi-op) and the
introduction of a 100-watt option for all entrants. When you submit your
logs, do please ensure that the cover sheet makes clear which section and
category you are entering (especially, make clear whether 12- or 24-hour,
whether 100-watt or high-power and whether CW, SSB or multimode. Otherwise
you will automatically be classified as 24-hour and/or multimode and/or
high-power). Advice on how to configure the most popular logging programs
for use in the contest has been posted on the Contests Committee Web page
(see above). There were particular problems last year with entrants who
had used CT. Under some configurations, the .LOG file did not contain the
received serial number (whereas the .ALL file did). Please check that your
log contains all the necessary information. Electronic logs are preferred,
ideally to the new address of iota.logs@rsgbhfcc.org . Even if you only
make a few QSOs, please send a log - all logs are entered in the master
database for checking purposes. We hope to improve the collection of logs
this year, and I am especially grateful to Trey N5KO for working with us
on this, as he has previously done for both CQ and ARRL....."

AS-008. Hiroshi, JO1EPY, will be active from the North Izu Oshima Island (Ooshima-machi, TOKYO) as JO1EPY/1 from July 27th (0800z) to July 28th (1500z). Activity will be on 40/17/15/12/10 meters SSB. AS-147. Look for Takeshi, JI3DST, to be active from Okushiri Island (Okushiri-cho Okushiri-gun Hokkaidou) as JI3DST/8 from July 26th (0700z) to August 5th (0000z). EU-008. A team from the Cockenzie and Port Seton Amateur Radio Club (C&PS ARC) in Scotland will once again operate from the Isle of Tiree (reference number IOSA NH04 and WAB NM04), which is the most westernly island of Scotland's Inner Hebridean Islands. Activity will be during the RSGB IOTA (Islands on the Air) Contest. The team, which consist of Cambell/MM0DXC, John/MM0JXI, Bob/GM4UYZ, Ron/GM4IKU, Landles/GM4XZZ, Brian/M0RNR, Iain/MM3IDM, Keith GM0FZM, Robert/MM0ANT and Robert/MM1BJO, will be using the special contest callsign GM2T. EU-011. Look for Steve, G0CKP, to be active as M0C from the Isles of Scilly during the IOTA Contest. QSL via G3NUG.
EU-016. (UPDATE) Steve, OM3JW, informs OPDX: "As you know, a group of OM and 9A operators will be active in the next IOTA Contest from Korcula Island with the callsign 9A8RR. A special prize will be given to the first three stations in Europe and the rest of World that makes the most contacts with 9A8RR during IOTA Contest. Prizes will be sent automatically a few days after the Contest."
EU-017. Nino, I2IAU, will be active as ID9/I2IAU from Lipari Island around July 15th to September 15th. He also plans to operate from other islands in the Eolie group.
EU-030. Wilf, DJ6TK, will be spending his holidays on Bornholm Island now through July 27th. He expects to be active on CW and SSB, mostly during his afternoon or late evening hours as OZ/DJ6TK. He plans to operate on 6 meters from Grid Square JO75LA and possibly from JO74MX as well.
EU-030. Willi, DJ7RJ, will be active as OZ/DJ7RJ from Bornholm Island now through August 2nd. Activity will be on 80-6 meters CW and SSB, with an entry in the IOTA Contest included. QSL via home callsign, direct or bureau.
EU-032. Laurent, F8BBL, reports that he will be active the weekends of August 10-11th and August 17-18th, from Madame Island, Oleron Island, Aix Island and Re Island. He will be QRP signing F8BBL/p. Activity will be on 40 and 20 meters, CW only, on the usual QRP frequencies (7030 +/- and 14060 +/-). His rig: K1 elecraft, 1 or 5w and long wire.
EU-115. Operators EI3JE, EI8GS, EI4BZ, EI6BT, EI8IR, M0XXX, G0WKW and G7ORR will be active as EI7M from Ireland during the IOTA Contest as a Multi-Op Island entry. QSL via EI6HB.
EU-136. (Update/Correction). The radio club "Rika" from Rijeka in Croatia along with an Austrian amateur group will activate Krk Island. (See OPDX.568). Their callsign will be 9A0R and will be used for the contest only. QSL via 9A9R (NOT DJ2MX as first reported) to: Vlatko Pavlica, P.O.Box 312, HR-51001 Rijeka, CROATIA.
EU-170. (CORRECTION for0 OPDX.569) Contest team OL5T (Operators OK1QM, OK1TC, OK1DUO, OK1DXF, OK1FLM, OK1PAT, OK1TNM, OK1UCI, OK1VEY with guests OK1DJG and OK1FUA) will participate in the IOTA Contest as 9A0A from Zdrelac on Pasman Island. QSL via OK1FLM. Before the contest they will be active as 9A/homecall.
EU-186. Metin, TA1ED, will be active as TA1ED/0 from Gokceada Island July 25-30th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters plus an entry in the IOTA contest. SWL is OK. QSL card via homecall.
EU-187. A group from SV9 will be participating in the IOTA Contest from Dia Island (Crete's costal island) using the special callsign SY9DIA. Activity will take place from 1200z, July 27th to 1200z July 28th. Grid Locator is KM25OK. They will enter the contest as a Multi-operator, mixed mode, IOTA Island Station 100W entry. Operators are SV9ANJ, SV9BMJ, SV9COL, SV9FBG, and SV9FBM. QSL via SV9ANJ
NA-065. Operators/members from the Federal Way ARC will be active as WA7FW/7 from Whidbey Island, from 0000z on July 20th through 2359z on the 21st. Activity will be on 40-10 meters. QSL via operator's instructions. Check the Web page: http://www.fwarc.org
NA-067. Jon, WB8YJF, will be active from Ocracoke Island (USI NC001S) from July 21-28th. Activity will be on CW, RTTY, and SSB. He will also be in the IOTA Contest as WB8YJF/NA67. NA-121. Lanny, W5BOS, who planned an operation from Walrus Island this past week, had equipment problems. It seems that Lanny set up Monday night and managed to make 2 QSOs before his receiver died. He was tired and called it a night hoping to figure out the problem Tuesday morning. Well, he turned on the radio Tuesday and "black poured out of the radio". End of story. Lanny spent his remaining time touring Walrus Island with a crew from The National Geographic Society. ADDED NOTE: OPDX InterNet Subscribers will receive the complete story from Lanny as an addtional bulletin.
NA-143. Operators KM5VI, N5LYG, VE3VIP, WA5UZB, KD5FTK, KD5FTL and K5JKB will activate Galveston Island as KM5VI during the upcoming IOTA Contest. QSL via KM5VI.
NA-158. Dave, WL7O, will be active from Kalgin Island as WL7O. Activity will be on 80-10 meters SSB/CW; 100 watts. Depending on the conditions, most of the activity is expected on 20, and 40 meters CW. QSL via CBA (preferred) or bureau.
NA-213. Members of the Pine Mountain DX Rangers will activate Dauphin Island during the IOTA Contest as WW4LL.
OC-088. Ian, G3TMA, informs OPDX that he will be active in the IOTA Contest (Mixed mode) as 9M6A, July 27-28t. This will be from the Hillview Gardens Resort. QSL is via N2OO.
SA-021. Operators Mariano/LU4EJ and Daniel/LU3DTD will be active from Ariadna Island, October 4-6th, as LU4EJ/D and LU3DTD/D. Suggested SSB frequencies are: 3680, 7090, 14200, 14260, 21300, 21260, 28460, 28560 and 50110 kHz. QSL via LU4EJ, address via qrz.com, or via the bureau.
SA-061. Mark, CE6TBN, will be on the air as CE6TBN/p from Mocha Island (DICE ICE-601) between July 27-28th and will take part in the IOTA Contest. QSL via N1IBM. For more information, check:
SA-069. (ATTENTION - 30 meter activity from Chile) This week, members of the Southern Cross DX Group (SCDXG), will operate from Santa Maria Island in the north of Chile from July 17-19th. This island is located in the Antofagasta Province Group. They will be on the air as 3G1A, a special Chilean callsign which has been assigned especially for this DXpedition. The crew is composed of Nick/XQ1IDM (team leader), J.P./CE4USW and Dan/XQ1ZW, and they will be active on all HF bands (including 160m) plus all WARC bands, on the modes: CW, SSB, RTTY and FM. A special license for operating on the 10 MHz has been granted since that band is not currently authorized in Chile for amateur use. At least there will be THREE stations working simultaneously from the location. The logs will be uploaded to the web page as soon as the operation is over at:
JD1, MINAMI TORISHIMA
Look for JH1EFP to be active from the JD1YBJ club
station July 16th through August 6th. Activity will be on 17 meters CW
and SSB; operating times are 0900-1100z and 2000-2200z.
LIGHTHOUSE NEWS AND ACTIVITY
Members of the Bahia Blanca DX Group will activate Recalada Lighthouse
(ARG 009), during the weekends in August (17-18th and 24-25th). Operators
will be AY7DSY, LU8DWR, LU9ESD, LU8EBK and LU6EPR. The group will also
be participating in the International Lighthouse Weekend.
(Correction/Update) Kjell, SM4DDS, will be operating from the Orskar Lighthouse, IOTA EU-084 (ARLHS SWE-052), during the IOTA Contest and will be using his IOTA callsign of 8S4C/5. Also, the World Lighthouse reference number is LH 0809 (new one).
Don, W9DC, informs OPDX that if you worked GM3OFT/p on Cava Island in the Orkneys on July 10th, it will count for LH-1555.
MUSEUM SHIP SPECIAL EVENT

The Museum Ship Special Event is the opportunity for you to work Warships,

PIRATE
It has been brought to our attention that a station signing 9Q5BQ
has been active on 30/20/17 meters CW. This station was NOT transmitting
from Kinshasa, or even maybe not D.R. Congo, and this callsign remains
unknown to both the licensing authorities and the 9Q National Society. As
per International Red Cross Kinshasa office, HB9AMO (ex operator 9Q5BQ
2001) has NOT been in the country since July 2001 (this may help you save
your green stamps). It is recommend to see/read the letter (28/06/01) at:
PJ2, CURACAO
Look for several members of the Bristol Contest Group to
be active again from PJ2. The group will be there for two weeks starting
July 22nd. This year's callsign will be PJ2Y during the IOTA Contest.
The operators will be Alan/G3XSV, Robin/G3TKF, Geoff/G4FKA, Chris/G0HFX
and Wilf/M0WLF. Outside the contest they will be operating as PJ2/homecall
on all bands from 80-6 meters, SSB and CW. Please QSL to their homecalls,
and to G3SWH only for PJ2Y.

Mario, DJ2MX, informs OPDX that he is NOT the QSL Manager for 9A0R
(Krk Island, EU-136) in the upcoming IOTA 2002 contest activity. QSL
Manager for 9A0R is 9A9R.
Ron, KA2BZS, informs OPDX that Bill Moore, NC1L, confirms 9Q1A and 9Q1YL, January and February of 2002 operations, are now approved for DXCC credit. QSL via Paul F2YT, bureau or direct with SAE + postage, and any extra contribution to benefit the installation of the national Society's club station at PTT Training Centre.
The Guam Contest Club was on the air during IARU HF World Chmpionship this past weekend as AH2R. Operators were JI3ERV/NH2C, JR7OMD/WI3O and JE8KKX/AH2K. QSL via JH7QXJ (direct or JA bureau, NOT KH2).
Activity this past weekend by OA4O during the IARU Contest was from the Headquarters of the Radio Club Peruano. They had two stations active on CW/SSB and their exchange was "59(9) RCP". The operators were OA4EI, OA4BHY, OA4DJW, OA4DKC, OA4DIX, OA4AHW and possibly others. QSL via OA4O, listed on QRZ.COM.
Jacob, P43P, was active with the callsign P40B during the 2002 IARU World Championship Contest on all bands on SSB. A full color QSL card will be available via P43P's QSL Manager Mario, I2MQP.
VK3WI, the official callsign of the Wireless Institute of Australia Victorian Division (VK3), was active during the past weekend in the IARU HF World Championship Contest (as an IARU Headquarters Station - WIA). QSL via the bureau or direct.
Delay in QSLs for ZL/PA0MIR and VK3FEI. Nico, PA0MIR, reports that there will be a slight delay in receiving QSL cards due to a mailing problem with the cards. He hopes to receive the cards sometime in the near future, and have them out (if all goes well) sometime in August. The direct cards will be taken care of first; he will try to confirm all multiple contacts made during his stay on the same cover even if only 1 contact was requested directly. Bureau cards will be taken care of after direct cards are answered.
SPECIAL EVENT
Mac, W3HC, informs OPDX that HC2FN notified him that his
club will be on the air July 24-25th with a special callsign HC2GPP to
commemorate the 479 years of the Guayaquil City Foundation. QSL direct to
the club.

An extremely difficult trip. Three commercial plane rides to Dillingham, Ak. A float plane 60 miles out to the boat and a 2 1/2 hour trip to the island. What made it hard was the amount of labor involved in moving the equipment from one place to another. Once we arrived in Dillingham we loaded into a van truck. Picked up a generator, gas, a tent, chair, and table. Antenna case weighs 69 lbs, another case 58 lbs, another 46 lbs, generator 100 lbs, and a small bag 35 lbs. This does not include the tent, table, and chair. We load all of this into a float plane and fly out to a fresh water lake located approx 300 yards from the beach where we carry everything to a small boat and take out to the 40 footer. That required 2 trips. Once we get to Summit island we have to take everything up the beach at about a 45 degree angle. At this point the old man is pretty beat. We assemble the tent and set camp, put the antenna up and by the way I had a perfect shot at Europe and the USA.
Its 0900Z on the 9th. Turn the radio on (Yaesu FT890). The band is pretty dead, hear a couple Pacific stations. Someone working a VE1 on 14260, I make a couple of calls but hear no one calling me. Change freq to 14040 and start calling CQ maybe 5-6 times, no responce. Make another CQ and at 0936Z NH7Y calls me (GREAT). Right after that qso JA7KQC calls with 599 off the back of the antenna. I call CQ several more times with no results. Because I'm tired I decide to lay down on the sleeping bag and get some rest. Three hours later I awake, start the generator and turn on the rig. I started calling CQ and the rcvr went dead but it looked like the transmitter was still working. I checked all the cables, turned a few knobs but thought I smelled something burning. I turned the rig off for a few minutes then turned it back on, pushed the mode switch to SSB and the rig made a loud BANG and black smoke came out. The rig went dead. I am very disappointed that I could not give you guys a new island. Laying there in the tent I was thinking maybe this will be my last try especially after the disappointing trip to C6A Dog Rocks in 2000. Well I'm back home and I feel much better. Guess I better get the IOTA directory out and look for someplace to go.
